Sounds like he's/she's a young un and will have to get the father to do that once they've plucked up the courage to point out the mistake.

Happened to a friend of mine with a iphone 3, luckily the seller totally understood and refunded without question.

Your email invoice will say what you bought. When you bought it you'll have got an invoice in your inbox and that will tell you the phone you bought and what it said at the time.

 

If it said 4S on the invoice then email the seller telling him it, if it just says iPhone 4 then you made the mistake.
