DaFoot Posted August 9, 2012 Share Posted August 9, 2012 IMHO any billiard sport is more of a sport than pseudo sports such as gymnastics, synchronized swimming, diving or dressage (the most pointless and boring of the lot) as these four have their results solely decided by a panel of judges rather than officials enforcing rules during play or taking accurate times or length measurements. If out take out all sports that involve a degree of ref/judge opinion you'd lose an awful lot. Even sports like football, hockey etc are subject to decisions of refs/umpires which will impact the result of the match. As for the others being purely judge scored, that's not quite right either. Certainly in gymnastics they start with a difficulty rating for example depending what they put in their routine - these will be fixed values to start from. Any sport where you have a ref, his decisions are down to his opinion. eg Was that tackle in the area penalty or not? In fact I don't think you'd have much left but track & field events if you take out all events where a refs opinion is needed. Oh and shooting..... But a decision by a referee (enforcing the rules during play) awarding a penalty in the last minute in favour of the opponents of Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United when the scores are level (a call that supporters of the relevant team might not like) is not quite the same as any "sport" where the sole result is decided by a panel of judges at the end of a performance. Besides decision to award a penalty kick may not result in a goal being scored. However I think pool is a more likely billiard sport to be included in any Olympic or Commonwealth Games than snooker.
