Is Broomhill going downhill or on the up?

Recommended Posts

If you want to blame anyone, blame Margaret Thatcher and her like who introduced the mindset that you were nobody unless you had a car. The huge growth in car ownership and usage had a major impact on Broomhill (not to mention having several major hospitals, several schools and a university in the neighbourhood!).

As I have mentioned earlier, the evidence says otherwise. What evidence do you have for your contention?

People usually want to see a firm proposal to comment on, so naturally, the Council usually have to set out what they are looking to do, before they go to consultaton. People generally find it difficult to engage unless there is something firm for them to look at.

All consultation responses are considered and they are set out for the decision makers (Councillors) so they can take a balanced view. But, they cannot possibly satisfy everyone and it is often the case that those whose view didn't carry the day will say they have been ignored. It's simply not true.

The Councillors need to take decisions and these are often difficult ones which involve someone being unhappy. That's why the decisions are taken by elected representatives who are answerable at the ballot box.

There was the little 'consultation' about the merger of Wisewood & Myers Grove a couple of years ago where the decision had already been made.

While we are talking about Broomhill, does anyone know who is interested in Clan House (the blue building) on Whitham Road. A Tesco Express?

Broomhill has definitely not gone downhill. There are a few empty shops, but the rest are brimming with life. I've been in every single shop on fulwood road for the past five days (don't ask why) and the emptiest has been the travel agents, the opticians and the massage parlour. The travel agents is understandable, it's winter and no one is thinking of holidays. The opticians is understandable too, I imagine they don't need a lot of business to keep going. I couldn't possible comment on the massage parlour. Every single other shop was packed with shoppers! Bargain booze might be struggling a little, but it used to be the broomhill supermarket until the Euro-spa opened up.

I think the mix of different shops is really good, although 'your nuts' closed down, a computer shop opened up in its place owned by the same people. Fruit a peel always seems to be doing well. The African restaurant has been doing business for ages. The charity shops like age uk, PDSa and oxfam are definitely here to stay.

Broomhill

The African restaurant has been fined for causing food poisoning on more than one occassion :loopy:

Went to the new S10 butchers yesterday morning and had to queue. Everyone in the quere was saying what a wonderful thing it was to see a butchers in Sheffield again. Hopefully this will spur on the owners of the two shops near the post office to get on and rent them to useful loval businesses.

Best wishes
