brian1941   11 #279 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Hi shaunfl, Thanks for clearing that up. Am I correct in assuming that the pub on the corner of Norroy Street and Saville Street East is therefore the Victoria Hotel ??  Regards, Peter.   --------------------- Hiya Peter, What about these pics of demolishing of Firth Browns in 1980s, when i started there about 1970s there use to be about 17,000 plus people working there. She recalls that 30,000 people worked in the Sheffield steel industry at that time and that the figure reduced to less than 4000 by the end of the 80's. Below are links to some pics which you may have seen before. The gates were even numbered (no odd numbers that is) at the areas shown in the pics. I was a clerk at Firth Brown from 1959 to 1962 at 36 gate. I left for a year or so and I returned in 1964 to 1966 as Chargehand at 38 gate. The pictures show demolition of Siemens electric furnace shops at 30 and 32 gates where I trained and gained my overhead crane driving licence. The biggest of those gateway facades, which was at 30 gate, is the one which is preserved and re-erected in the position where 34 gate was with the clock, albeit set back from the road a bit.(see 5th. pic. down and click on zoom.) Immediately next to 34 gate was, with canopy over, the Head Office entrance, which was demolished, which in turn was next to the preserved 'President Buildings' offices. (See also last pic. for re-erected gateway, and a gap between that and the 'President Buildings', where the Head Office entrance was.)  http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t02994&pos=359&action=zoom&id=33348 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t02998&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33352 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t02996&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33350 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t03001&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33355 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t02997&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33351 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t02999&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33353 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;t03002&pos=1&action=zoom&id=33356 http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;c01486&pos=409&action=zoom&id=1991  Peter.  ---------- Post added 15-10-2014 at 17:39 ----------  Hi steve Johnson here I worked at firth browns for six years from 1970-76.New a lot of lads in engineering shop played footy with a lot of them.I worked in roll shop with Dennis Barnsley frank lyndsey john Fletcher. ---------- Post added 10-10-2014 at 12:36 ----------  Great Six years.  Hi Steve,  Welcome to the Forum and the Firth Brown thread. Â I understand that Forgemasters are producing more tonnage now than ever before. I suppose automation had to come to be able to compete. As you say though, one does wonder how it affected the lives of those who lost their jobs. Fortunately I changed careers some time before the closures came. It was great to work with a lot of lovely people in those days though, and see the hundreds of people at work just in my small part of Firth Browns. That's why I love to look back on that time in my life. A lifestyle that will probably never return in the same way. Â Peter.
