mj.scuba   10 #313 Posted October 31, 2009 The conflicts in both Iraq and Afghanistan have been presented as being essential in introducing democracy to these countries...  If what you are saying is that those aims are futile (particularly in Afghanistan) I wholly agree with you, but I don't see how that detracts from the individual soldiers bravery going into battle putting their life on the line whilst the rest of us sit comfotably at home at a PC typing on an internet forum. jobee   10 #314 Posted November 1, 2009 Dont bother discussing Vietnam with me . I know more about that than you'll ever know unless you were also there. I'll make this brief comment by saying it was a screwed up war, ill conceived and badly fought. I see a comparison between that and Afghanistan.  I dont blame the soldiers who are sent off to fight in these wars and I'll defend them always. The buck starts at the top   Yes Tony Blair [Christian/socialist]new he'd dropped a clanger and did a runner from office, Then the Pope accepted him into his religion knowing full well he'd helped orchestrate the bloodbath in Iraq. The lunatics are running the asylum. The Pope is now slagging homosexuals.
 Share this content via...
hollymay   10 #315 Posted November 3, 2009 patrol work for soldiers, where most get killed. 8/30 /100 ish go out boots on the ground looking for the enemy.the enemy does not want to take on soldiers as most of the time they know they would get killed. so the enemy has to find other ways to kill the soldiers. the I.E.D. Improvised explosive divice. are cheap and simple. they can be any size. and are set off in 3 main ways by command wire, a wire that sends the go bang signal, with enemy on one end and the I.E.D on the other. a radio control detenation, signal sent via mobile etc. then booby trap, land mine trip wire etc. they are planted and left in a place where soldiers may, will, or have gone. on top of this you have ambush, where enemy wait for you on ground they have chosen, delibarate attack where the enemy take you on in a classic fire fight. and the suicide attack of course. also snipers, long range well hidden marksman. now soldiers face this every time they patrol. a patrol could last hours days weeks longer. every time they move they could get hit by anyone of the above. why are they heroes?  next time you go to work imagine the I.E.D the ambush the sniper the suicide attack set attack. that could hit you every step you take for that day at work, what makes these young kids heroes is they do it every day for a six month tour, after tour after tour. these soldiers are good very good and are well led very well led. otherwise way more would be dead.  TO SAY THEY GET KILLED BECAUSE THEY ARE STUPID, IS AN INSULT OF THE WORSE KIND. AND OF COURSE IS TOTALLY WRONG. THEY ARE HEROES, EVERY ONE OF THEM   BY POPPYS!!!!!!!!!  yet another hero gone
 Share this content via...
