Did anyone work at Surmanco?

no idea what happened to anyone sadly, its gone now. didnt know jeans family worked there too. someone told me she died but could be a rumour .

 

hiya ,I heard the same thing, her sister pam I've seen her a couple of times not to talk to mind, when I was there jean was in charge of the polisher and grinding dept. I remember the steel stairs see us running up and down them with red hot dies to sink them on the presses, brian Humphries, Gordon Reynolds, and me, to les bocking controlling the press, health and safety would have a field day if we could go back.

i remember the beresford sisters, jean,joan,the other sister was married to les bocking.

did anyone know harry cocker and his brother? hilda lunn, brenda hadfield, hugh tolley , mr braun my mum worked there in 1952/53

 

hiya LL i remember one year hugh tolly's son was entered in the star walk, and the one i knew was bill cocker foreman in the plating dept,i remember mr wood was the works manager, the last time i saw him was in the fish and chip restaurant just off the moor.

Does anyone remember Peggy Senior? (Margaret) I know my nan worked there in the 1970s/80s but I'd like to know how long she worked there in total before the 1970s.

Also, does anyone know the name of the retro cafe/bar that was next to Rare and Racy on Devonshire Street about 13 years ago? It was a sort of Mexican theme(?) with pictures of Casablanca and old movies on the walls.

I remember Peggy....I started at Surmanco's in 1959 at the age of 15. She was working there then in the assembly rooms. NICE LADY !

I grew up in Cavendish Street and can remember some of the cars that used to be parked outside Surmanco, particularly the E type Jaguar. We understood the owners were called Hoffman, which must have been the maiden name of Inge Sugden. The caretaker was called Jack Harrison and he lived further up the street with his foreign (German?) wife. We moved away in 1975 - does anyone know whether Surmanco moved to another site or just closed down and, if so, when?

I worked at Surmanco around 69/70 only lasted a couple of months I remember Jean Mitchell a good looking woman with dark reddish hair If I'm not mistaken. I also remember Jack Harrison I lived in a flat at the bottom of Gell Street.

hiya just read your letter and noticed your name. gmarshman, set me thinking in 1953 when i started work at surmanco as a 15 year old there was a oliver marshman working in the toolroom, he told me he was on the stage his stage name waS OLLIE MARSH and he had performed at the old hippodrome at sometime.

hiya the name was erver the building on fitzwilliam st was named erver house. it was inga sugden reg sugden was his name i remember he was very smart his suits were only cleaned twice then discarded, the foreman in the toolroom jim naylor was the same size so he would get them, i remember peggy senior when i sterted work at surmanco in 1953 november there were two peggies worked on the sissor setting table one of then had two cousins working in the same assembly shop one was nellie green the other i think was called doris, on the setting table was pauline turton margaret hill, and a mrs prozac who came to england after the war from poland.
