I've spent much of the last 3 years driving in and around cities and towns all across England and without doubt I have not come across anything like (the majority of) Sheffield's roads.

A very good comparison of road surfaces can be found between Eckington and Mosborough on the Derbyshire boundary by Windmill Greenway. The difference between them has always been very noticeable, even more so after the recent resurfacing on the Derbyshire side :(

There seem to be two issues with Sheffield roads. Firstly, the residential roads have had minimal maintenance, but secondly, and more dangerously, many of the main routes in and out of the city have had huge amounts of work done on them by Street Force and utility companies, and the replacement surfaces used are shoddy beyond belief. London Road and Chesterfield Road are perfect examples of this. I got in touch with the council a while back about whether there is any sign-off process at all for work done (as there either isn't or else it is clearly not working) and they completely avoided answering the issue. Unfortunately, the last council (and the new one haven't proved to be any different in this regard) thought that if you throw loads of money at the City Centre people will be really impressed with it, forgetting that most people have to get into the City Centre first.

To be honest there have been several polls and threads on here about the roads and no one has ever done anything about it.

Polls some dating from 2003 and still no improvement

The council has buried it's head in the sand for long enough. It is time that the did something instead of speed bumps and traffic islands how about filling holes in first you get enough money from speed cameras it's time to use the money to make the roads safer.

But you do not want to be hoarding it in Icelandic bank accounts to pay for the pensions of public sector workers!..........the game is up, hopefully.

I can only speak for Yorkshire, Notts and Derbyshire as they are they only areas I know very well - but sheffield has the worst quality road surfaces out of these areas. Bad sign posting has to be Barnsley and for just plain no sense road planning take a trip to Leeds.

There's several issues here:

1. This is a national problem. Councils all over the country don't receive anything like enough money from the government to keep their roads in good condition.

2. Since Sheffield Council took over responsibility for the roads in 1986, they systematically underfunded maintenance. Because of the way it was funded by Government, Councils got the choice of where to spend the money and they spent a substantial proportion elsewhere. That's local democracy.

3. If you want decent public services, you need to pay more taxes. Underfunding is a problem across most public services.

excuse me! if the council stopped wasting money on speed humps every 10 feet and spent it on fill in the pot holes this city would be a lot better off. where i live in high green some of the pot holes are so big you would think the yanks have bombed them and just left massive craters.:hihi::hihi:
