SuzXxX Â Â 10 #1 Posted April 16, 2008 Hi, I'd like some advice but not from someone in an electrical shop just trying to get as much commission as possible. Â I'm looking to buy a new tv but what's better an LCD or a Plasma? And where will I get the best deal in Sheffield? Â Thanks x
 Share this content via...
RazorSHarp   10 #2 Posted April 16, 2008 Depends really on what size you want...  Your going to get 1 million answers to this but the answer I get from our AV specialists is 32inch and below LCD anything bigger plasma.  I've got a 32" LCD and a 50" plasma, they both have their positives and negatives but go into on of the high street stores and have a look and see what you think. That's usually the best course of action.
 Share this content via...
brian@bnevin   10 #3 Posted April 16, 2008 I bought mine at Currys at Drakehouse.I went on their site on the internet, but without seeing them in real life, its a bit confusing.I got LCD as they tell me they are more reliable.Get some prices off the internet and they'll match them in the shop. *SueW*   10 #4 Posted April 16, 2008 We opted for LCD after taking advice from our TV repair man who was about to retire. He said plasma were not as reliable as LCD and were more expensive to repair. I would do to John Lewis to check out exactly what is on offer. That's what we did but eventually bought from a shop in Killamarsh called Audiovision. Not only did they give the same 5 year warranty they also dropped the price by over £150. Having said that, this was over 3 years ago when LCD televisions cost far more than they do now. I would also check the supermarkets as both Sainsbury and Morrisons have had some cracking offers on Sony sets in the last 12 months or so. You could also try Costco just off the Parkway. You have to be a member if you want to purchase but can always request a day pass which allows you to browse. Don't forget to give them a ring first as you need to take ID with you and I can't remember what counts for ID purposes. Good luck! I've taken guests with me and they've bought plenty of things themselves, they just scan my card first.
 Share this content via...

RazorSHarp   10 #7 Posted April 16, 2008 We opted for LCD after taking advice from our TV repair man who was about to retire. He said plasma were not as reliable as LCD and were more expensive to repair.  That may have been true about 3 years ago but technology has a funny way of moving forward and if Plasma was so unreliable do you think Panasonic would have developed a 103" model for corporate display purposes?  As I said earlier, it is up to what the buyer wants and likes the look/cost of. Reliability can be covered by warranty and manufacturer support. Buy a good name at a price you are looking to spend. Then you'll be happy. mills   10 #8 Posted April 16, 2008 Hi, I know you are looking for a telly in Sheffield but check this site out, I got the samsung 37 inch lcd from this site with free delivery. It's brilliant and the price is very reasonable for what you get, I think anyways.
 Share this content via...

Haydn1971   10 #10 Posted April 16, 2008 The general opinion that I read and hear is that if you are looking at sizes below 40" then look for LCD, but for sizes above, look at Plasma - the tales of burn in, gas leaks and such are all myths now - you will always find an armchair expert claiming he/she has a mate who etc... but to be fair, there isn't much in it, I personally find plasmas offer a deeper richer colour, but thats my own personal taste  The independants sometimes have some crazy deals on end of line modles, I got my Panasonic just before the new range came in, RRP was in the region of £1800, with a stand at £500, the online stores were showing £1100 + £200 for the stand, but Panasonic Shop on Pinstone Street did the TV, Stand, 5yr warranty and free delivery for £1000 - bargin at the time - 15 months ago  Shop around, Panasonic, Samsung, Pioneer and Sony all have good reputations and tend to do well in reviews - also, invest £4 in this months What Hifi and TV - worth a second independant opinion
 Share this content via...
MrAndrew   10 #11 Posted April 16, 2008 As a part of my job I have developed a TV price comparison website (shameless plug - we are a small local company - http://www.stockchecker.co.uk) and as a result I have spent months watching these TV retailers battle it out and my advice is this, always buy online.  By all means go in stores and check the TV's picture, see what you think, but then go home and find the best price online. The savings run into hundreds and the risk is virtually nil for an established retailer (the Dixons website is offering some of the best prices around at the moment).  I bought my TV for £300 less than Comet's in-store price from a company called Sound and Vision, their service was excellent. Rob_1 Â Â 10 #12 Posted April 16, 2008 The above advice which suggests going for a plasma 40" or over and an LCD below that is good, I frequent the AV forums and this is often mentioned. Have a look on http://www.avforums.com and there are dedicated sections for Plasma/LCD with owners reviews etc and also a deal section where the sponsoring shops post their best deals. Â It's also worth noting that John Lewis will price match, AND they give a free 5 year warranty on electrical items. Â Richer Sounds are well worth a try as well - they often have screens that have just been discontinued at very good prices and their extended warranties are very cheap.
