there is loads of research done on this, its known as optimal level of fluoride. it varies with Temprature of that region as well. as in Hongkong its set on 0.5ppm due to hot weather and more consumption of water. And same way in west midland and Southampton its set around 1ppm. well it can affect the teeth like disclouration etc if its used in high concentration. Same way dont give your kids fluoridated toothpaste without prescription of dentist. Check before you buy your toothpaste. I use toothpaste with triclosan like there is one in the market, Colgiate advance. Well check with your dentist before you use any. There are loads of research done in UK and all around the world on this issue. I can not provide links here, however you can check with British fluoride society or British dental council about water fluoridation etc.
