  1. The Porter cottage, its a great pub with a good mix of students and older, was looking round the other night and it was interesting to see just how many people were having a good time and enjoying themselves.

This is now my choice for a quick pint and has a friendly atmosphere. I also rate the Sheaf View, Kelham Island Tavern and the Bath Hotel.

Lescar has lost its touch since they did it up and made it more of a food place.

  2. I have organised a night out for friends and family to see Stomp at the Lyceum in February. I initially bought 30 tickets and thought after those had gone then I wouldn't be able to get any more.

After more people asked if they could come I called to check availablility and had no problems getting another 20!

The lady at the box office advised that normally productions for Feb would be close to being sold out now but this year that wasn't the case.

I know that this is a tough time of year for all of us with Xmas bills to be paid and tax to be paid at the end of January for us self employed people but the question I would ask is

Have the Theatres done a good job in marketing upcoming events?? I am sure there used to be more advertising and posters around the city or is it just me? Obviously the recession is one factor and maybe Sheffield Theatres need to consider this in their pricing policies. (Stomp tickets were £19 each, which aint cheap but the production is brill)

It seems such a shame with The Crucible just having a makeover and all the theatres being lovely places to visit. Just wondered what anyone else thought.

  3. Do a 10 mile walk to Hathersage starting at Hunters Bar, through forge dam and via Ringinglow and stop at YHA there. The university probably has a walking group who could kit you out with maps and offer a few tips etc. You could get the bus back easily.

Go and watch one of the football teams - I wont state my preference

What about watersports or cycling somewhere like Rother Valley Country Park - its great in the spring or any time of year

  4. Does Chocodore do choc-tasting evenings, too? I am gutted as I was trying to arrange a choc-tasting evening for my mum's birthday this week at Cocoa, but they are not running them this month.

Dont think they do evenings, their web site is http://www.chocadores.co.uk/

I did ask them in the shop if they could do the dipping choc like Madrid and they said if they could hold of some way to do the doughnuts they would! Any one on here any ideas????

I could just eat / drink some of it now. Another place I had nice hot chocolate was at a Tenerife FC football game where they didnt drink beer, just gloopy hot chocolate.

Gonna make a hot chocolate now!

  5. I went to the Kashmir last night for the first time in 6 months. It was nice to see it so busy - almost all the tables were full at 9pm. I ordered a veg thali and my partner Spinach, Mushroom and Lentil curry.

When the food came I was pleasantly surprised as the thali was different to the last times I have been. There was a butter bean curry which was out of this world and my missus was keen to nick some too! (We are both vegetarians) The naan was also fabulous.

I asked the chap who owns the place if there was a new chef but no, it would seem absence on our part makes the food taste even better.

Yes this place is basic but the food speaks for itself. My only wish is that it was nearer my part of Sheffield!

  6. I love this place! The 2 ladies that run it are great and remind me in a funny (in a nice way) way of the 2 chaps who sell suits on the fast show with their double act way of selling their wonderful chocolate to you. Yum chocs suit you sir! The drinking chocolate they sell for you to take away is the best I have had bar Madrid where you get the doughnut strips to dunk in their gloopy stuff!

  7. Went on Saturday night after a refurb and new opening.

Would have to say that things aren't much better than before. The venue was busy and the live band was great but the food.... We are both vegetarians and went for the mushroom ravioli. The food took a while (and were told by the staff the kitchen was busy) and when it came it was completely uncooked, hard pasta and cold centre!!!! We complained and we were given a complimentary glass of champagne.

When the recooked meal came it was quite nice but this sort of experience is not something you expect after a relaunch. I would this place to succeed as there isn't anything else like this on Eccy Road but it needs to up its game a bit. The live band was a good idea but i feel this hasn't been marketed well enough as everyone i talked to about it hadn't heard about the relaunch.

  8. Best in Sheffield is AAGRAH without a doubt, it isn't too expensive, especially if you go early and get 2 for 1 on mains. 2nd best is Kashmir. 3rd Mangla, however the Mangla isn't as good as it used to be - 3 years ago you would struggle to get in at 9 pm on friday or saturday but not anymore.

I bought one of the privilege cards in May for Aagrah and used it loads to get discount off meals , this for me makes Aagrah very good value. The service is great and food consistently good. The mixed vegetarian starter is fabulous even for a meat eater. The tamarind dip is out of this world.

Kashmir also consistently good, owner is wonderful and very friendly, I love the feel to this place, no pretension whatsoever, the food talks. If you fancy something a bit different ask Bashir the owner to customise something for you and he will.

Mangla is good on a good night but doesnt seem to be as consistent as it used to be. The popadoms are great, the portions hearty and the food here is very cheap and good value , you can eat for less than £7.50 per head including pops, main and rice.

Also worth a mention are Akbars near Rotherham, just a pain to get to if you have a drink and live in Sheffield due to taxi costs.

In my opinion Balti King and Shapla and Everest are sooooo very overated, they are passable if you have had 5 pints but thats about it - "**** up curry houses".

  9. Me and a friend went last night, we didn't have any vouchers, it was just the Aagrah was packed out. We ordered our starters at 8.00 and they came at 9.00. With the long wait we managed to wangle a free drink for our table and the couple next to us.

We had a mixed vegetarian starter for 2 which was by standards of other restaurants in Sheffield City Centre very poor indeed. Not such a long wait for our mains. I had a spinach and paneer dish whilst my friend had a pork bhuna. My friend said his was OK, mine was decidedly average. Why the huge plate of food and why the need to give both rice and bread?

The venue is nice, the location is good and the serving staff very good. However the food was over priced, average and just not seasoned properly. To survive this restaurant will need to improve dramatically. I wont go again and certainly wouldn't receommend
