  1. I remember the track well. They used to call it the Woodyard. I was in a team called Greno Hawks with some mates off Weavers Close. Once had a race with Arnold Haley and Bob Valentine who were staying nearby in a caravan. Can't think which one of us won, but they gave us a can of beer.... only 14 or 15 at the time mind !! Another occasion I remember Pudding forcing Steven Plain off the track and over the wall into the Wheelers garden. Quite a drop if I remember. Chris Durrans mentions too the bottom track in the woods near Penistone Rd. Called this the Orchard, had an Apple tree in it. Once tried to arrange a local cycle speedway meeting with Chris I think ?? and a team he had got together, but I don't think it ever took place. Happy days ......
  2. That was my mum - Beryl Simpson - she was married then. Have you any photos you could PM to me?
  3. My mum was born in the Grapes on Gower St in 1938 where she lived - Beryl Moore. My grandparents (George and Annie Moore) ran the Grapes from the 1930s to their retirement in 1966. Anyone remember them ?
  4. My father in law is Tony Tee AKA Tony Thorpe. Tony was in a group in the 70s with Al McKinnon called The Easy Three. Al sadly died in a house fire quite a few years ago.
  5. Not the same Pete who ran it in the 70s!! Remember Friday nights, bag of chips 6p. Bargain ........ and you got decent scraps for that !!
  6. We had a coalman in Grenoside in 60s /early 70s who drove a big blue American Mustang, they called him Lol and at one time I think it was his daughter who had a pet lion cub. I remember reading about it in the Sheffield Star.
  7. My mum is Beryl Moore and lived on Gower St. My Grandparents (George and Annie) had the Grapes Inn on Gower St between 1930s and 60s. Sadly Beryl died in 1978. My mum would have attended Burngreave School late 40s to early 50s. She had an older cousin Audrey. Not sure of her maiden name, may have been Lawrence. As I was only young when she passed away I'm tying to find anyone who knew her and may have some stories to reminisce about. I do remember one particluar story she used to tell me when she entered a school swimming gala and was disqualified for running across the bottom of the pool because she couldn't swim !! I know my mum worked at one point at Excells Chemist (not sure about spelling ??) on corner of Ellesmore Rd and Gower St, and later at John Plant shoe shop in town. The name Margaret Cutts is mentioned on here a few times. I think she was a relation to my mum, is she Margaret Lawrence who had the twins Andrew and Ruth and lived on Buckingham St? - across from the school off Ellesmere Road.
  8. Hi, I'm new on here, so please be gentle with me !! Trying to trace anybody who knew my mother who sadly passed away in 1978 My mother's parents used to have the Grapes Inn on Gower Street Pitsmoor. My mum lived there between 1938 and 1960. Attended Burngreave School. Used to work at Excells (?? not sure about spelling) Chemist in Pitsmoor and John Plant Shoe shop in Sheffield. Moved to Grenoside in 1960 when she and dad married. Also worked at Grenoside Hospital (during the '70s) after she married. Would really like to hear from anyone who knew her and may have some stories to tell. Thanks. Neil.
