  1. Smokey City Stompers ---------- Post added 12-12-2015 at 17:16 ---------- Jazz at the Cambridge St ---------- Post added 12-12-2015 at 17:20 ---------- Smokey City Stompers Last week I was given a recording made at the Cambridge St restaurant oh the 30th Sept 1949 by The Smokey City Stompers
  2. Regarding Bob Alexander, Sadly he died a few years ago. He had quite a collection of cars at one time or another. I did a few rallies with him. The Manchester Blackpool Vintage in a Delage, the Manchester again in a Richardson, one in a One in a M.G Tiger One in a Vauxhall 30/98 We towed the Delage in from a scrap dump in Barnsley. It cost £25. I could have had a Cord for £28, but who wanted a big American car in those days. This was in about 1962. Bob also played double bass with the Steel City Stompers and then with The Howerd Davis Band. Haa Memories
  3. Many years ago Radio Sheffield had a jazz programme one night a week during which Dave Brennan who ran the show, interviewed some of the musicians who played in Sheffield at that time. After much searching I found amongst my tapes an interview with Phil Wade who was the drummer with the Jazz Hounds. He tells of the Rotherham Jazz Hounds starting to play at the Cross Keys in 1949 In that year a group of chaps got together at the home of Duncan Ballantyne to play for their own amazement. Within a short time they had moved to the Cross Keys and before you knew it the place was heaving. I do seem to think that I heard that the band started before the war but I cannot find any proof of that. In 1949 the band members were Duncan clt, Colin Marner tpt, Kenny Blakemore tmbn, Don Waterhouse pno, Mat Hoople bnjo, Ellis Devine tuba Phil Wade drums. The band did have changes as time went by. Andy Walker, Mal Bramley,Tiny Smith, Dave Howitt came in as others left. I hope that this recollection might help in your search.
  4. Hi Boofie As I am one of the last of the Stompers, I can tell you that as far as I can remember.we made two recordings. Both were made at Curtis Studio on London Rd. There may be somebody who taped us but I think that is highly unlikely. Who are you?
  5. About four years ago we were in New Zealand and somewhere north of Auckland we went into a little museum in what I believe was one of the first places to be found there. The first thing on display that we saw was a selection of tools from Tyzack Sons & Turner.
  6. What about some of the other motor factors, Gepsco. Edmund Walker, the one on Houndsfield Rd during the 50s
  7. Mitch & Tich both worked at Clarkes motor factors before they set up near Button Lane and then moved to Devonshire St
  8. Kitted out at Padgate, square bashed at Hereford, trade training at Henlow, worked on Super fortresses at Conningsby and Marham. Fred Truman in the next hut when I was at Hereford. We had some good times in the RAF
  9. I will set the scene. Credden Hill RAF camp Hereford 1953 September. Square bashing , the first hair cut. We had a Gypsy in our squad, thick black hair of which he was very proud. The barbers don't take prisoners and the a fore said barber proceeded to demolish AC2 Swan's crowning glory. I don't think he ever recovered
  10. Memories of St Chads. During the 1950s the scouts and youth club put on Pantomimes to raise money for the scouts who were short of cash. These panto's were a huge success and it was amazing what hidden talent came out of these shows. The Steel City Stompers also were born in the youth club and played in Sheffield for quite some time.
  11. I have a photo of The Steel City Stompers playing at The Norton on a night long ago
  12. THe Steel City Stompers, We had many changes during our years, the reason being that National service got in the way. Some ten years ago we had a reunion. The original trombone Ken Curtis was over from Australia and the remains got together .There were at least 50 of us still around.
  13. The drummer at the Kenwood was Lennie Briggs
  14. My daughter's black Labrador has been missing since yesterday from the Dore area of Sheffield. If you can help please phone 0114 2747119. Her name is Darci. Thank you all for your interest. Glad to report that Darci is now back home.
