  2. its about time they came out with this ticket there as been that many rumors flying about that they were going to fetch out this ticket and when asked about it the reply I got what ticket it is news to me. lets hope it takes off as it would help me a great deal there will be know qeueing at the train station for a ticket and if you are late for the train at least you can get on knowing that you have got a valid ticket and it will be cheaper on the train, whats the price a single to doncaster is about £3 .25 or it could be more havent been on the train for a while spent quite a few hours on the station though.

  5. someone on here paid 80 quid for a freeview box I only paid 20 quid for mine and it is brand new its not what you know its who you know. since we have had freeview I dont get the chance to watch it as my girlfriend and my son and daughter as always got the pop channel on I wouldnt mind but they play all the same songs after a while and the other thing is why do they play pop crap when they ought to play iron maiden, led zeppelin, motorhead, metallica, I think I have only ever heard one rock band on the music channel and that is the s**t group bon jovi. oh and my son who is 2 years old he gets to see cbbc channel is it a wonder that I spend most of my time sat playing my video games on my pc. freeview you can stick it since we have had it I have missed some good programs but when I say I want to watch say a film I get shot down in flames we are watching the pop channel so I dont say anything to them they are in for a shock in the next 2 weeks as I am having sky put in my computer room and it is only for me when I go out the door will be locked as it as got four locks on it they wont get in also I dont allow them in my computer room after 19:30 as it is my proper time to relax mind you all day is my time to relax, so freeview it is not for me.
  6. if anybody saw the calender news tonight they said that shipman as been cremated here in sheffield and that is wife and there two kids was the only ones there to see it happen they also said that he wasnt going to be buried or have a headstone look what would have happened if he had been buried and got a headstone I would think that it would have been defaced or some idiot would have tried to bring him out of his grave ie redug up. I also think that he should have been cremated somewhere else and not here in sheffield but thats my out look on life.
  7. Hi texas. there is some news for you they have just put the triangle back in at treeton viaduct and they have put a new line down something to do with the old tinsleys sheds what I might add as now been flattened we have heard on the railway talk that they are going to spend a mega amount of money to revamp the frieght yard we have also heard that they are going to put the fueling point back in something to do with mr branson this but until it happens it just hear say. if you go onto this web site called vintage trains you will see that the leander steam loco is coming sheffield on a special it is doing 3 round trips they have said at vintage trains that it is going back to its old stomping ground in and around sheffield.
  8. Hi melthebell. where did he work in firth browns as the name rings a bell ?
  9. I am a photographer and I use quite a lot of digital camera's the questions I get asked like so you are a photographer how do you put 35mm film in a digital camera ? do you have to walk around with a big battery booster pack as they drain the batteries. I bet you have to spend quite a bit of time in the darkroom to develop the film and do you have to do it in complete darkness like 35 mm SLR cameras. I once had a lady come up to me and she asked so what do you do all day when you are out and about I had got two cameras in my hand a gadget bag on my shoulder a bloody big tripod on my gadget bag and still she asked what do you do all day.
  10. hey up texas. Right if you walk up brightside lane past what use to be BSC you come to a roundabout with a steel sculpture in the middle of it, so if you go round to the right you go under the railway bridge towards grimethorpe if you go left at the roundabout you go up to attercliffe but if you carry on you are going towards the wicker well brightside goods yard was on the left handside what is now the new sorting office for the post it started just across from BSC and finnished up right up to the other steel bridge that carried the mainline to meadowhall. I think it had got a fair few roads in the sidings mostly stocked with wagons and bogie bolsters the odd fruit vans plus quite a few guards vans, if I am not mistaken I think that if you walk down under the steel bridge on your way to brightside lane you can still see part of the old goods yard.
  11. Yes I think it was called attercliffe goods now you come to mention it.Can you remember the sidings where the main post office is now on brightside lane well we use to have to go in there to pick up the scrap wagons for firth browns this is long before they put our goods line into use and we always had to have a plate inspector with us as we had to cross the main line I think we only did for about 6 months,Then our line was brought in to use good job really I should have hated to break down across the mainline as our engines were unreliable mind you what do expect from diesel's. I know that the firm splashed out and bought a brand new one that was a big bugger to drive I swear if you sounded the horn they would have heard you down at BSC, but one joker in the fitters decided to change it and never said anthing to anybody so we was coming down from E5 melting shop with about 60-50ton ingots on when a lorry was across the line what we was travelling on when all of a sudden our driver decided to blow the horn we had the woody woodpecker tune coming out of the horn, I have never seen some many gaffers appear in one go and ours was not too pleased we thought it was brilliant infact my underhand shunter fell off the loco and broke his foot.
  12. I think it is still there well it was last year as I went to a formal do there I tried to get a photo of it but was looked upon by so many frowns like dont do that not here and me being a photographer as well also being into the railways in a very big way did quite a lot of photos of the railway but to take a photo of one of the best name plates to be carried by a steam loco it was just not the thing to do I even tried at the end of the night to get the shot of it but not a chance too many upper crust people there. if I get the chance this year to go to the cutlers hall I will make damm sure I get the photo of the nameplate even if I have to get there 3 hours before everybody else.watch this space for more details on if I get the photo or not.
  13. just as well that we forgot the suedeheads they were worse than the skinheads I use to work in a pub on the outskirts of sheffield and they was always causing trouble at least with the skins you could have a beer with them and a chat but the suedeheads they were a different kettle of fish. I can recall a suedehead getting knocked off his feet by a skinhead who was stood in the pub I worked at the other skinheads just picked him and put him over a wall the answer I got was thats were you normally put ****. some of the skinheads who came into the pub were brilliant guys to get to know I wonder to this day what ever happened to them do they meet up for old time sake and talk of the things they use to do,maybe not I being an old skinhead havent got the time to chat to my fellow skins also I dont dwell on my past times when I was younger too many bad memories.
  14. The skinheads of 1968-1971 wore levi stay pressed trousers doc martin boots or doc martin shoes, ben sherman shirts and crombie coats the doc martin boots had got to be red and polished with ox blood polish can you still get ox blood polish oh and braces cant for get the braces.
  15. Hi to kiwi and texas. Thanks for them kind words it is nice to know that there is people like you in the cyber world.Kristian is helping me quite a lot it is just brilliant to be able to talk to you people it is going to get very rough in the next 2 weeks so I might not be able to write back to you all but I will try thats if I am not in too much pain, this past week as been hell for me I have had 3 injections in 4 days straight into my colon.well texas I thought you knew that they had numbers on the ingots it is the size of them thats why if you get an ingot say 150 tonnes it is called a G1 if its a ingot say 250 tonnes then it will be known as a J4 and so on.We had chap work with us he was the weighman most of the time it would be guess work when it comes to the ingots as he was referred to as blind bob he may have been blind or his eyesight wasnt very good but he could lick the best domino players i have seen him walk away with about £30 after he had been playing not bad for a chap who has got bad eyes. oh texas I am going back down to grimesthorpe at the end of april as I have got some photos to do for a chap who is moving abroad he is going to live in the USA he is a fellow railway man dont think he was at grimesthorpe though maybe darnall sheds.
  16. Hi texas.yes firth browns did go up to the wicker you know when you get to the top of brightside lane going towards the wicker and you go under the steel railway bridge well firth browns started just passed the steel viaduct the one that carried the mainline to brightside and to meadowhall now and firth browns finnished just below the wicker goods yard nearly opposite thos wards what was firth browns is now the industrial park have you seen that big drop hammer that stands on the corner just down from the wicker well were that is that was all firth browns in fact the rolling mills was just across from that drop hammer.I dont know if you heard about the atlas melting shop catching fire at firth browns there was the E5 melting shop and the atlas melting shop.We use to have to move some very big ingots when we worked on the railway system have you heard of H5's,G1-G6 ingots. I cant remember the other ones I can recall an incident that happened on saville street where one of our locos was taking one bloody big ingot to the heat treatment and had to cross the road well it broke down in the middle of the street that wasnt so bad apart from the ingot was white hot.we had a right job trying to uncouple the bogie from the loco so that they could pull the dead loco out of the way.
  17. Hey texas. you ought to go and have a look around there you wouldnt recognise the place now it as changed that much I dont think the sheds are still there but dont quote me on it I use to work on the internal railway system at firth browns and we had to always go down there to pick up the scrap wagons what BR use to drop off in a sidings we never went on to the main line we had a line that went down the side of the main line,so we could just couple up to the wagons and pull them to our sidings mind you thinking back we did once go on to the mainline we had a runner way it was a bogie that had got a very big ingot mould on we had shunted it on to our mainline this is inside firth browns and the bugger took off how it didnt jump the points on to the mainline I will never know and we was glad that there wasnt a mainline passenger train due otherwise there would have been one big derailment. So I suggest you go and have a look down grimesthorpe you will be shocked how it as changed.
  18. why cant they clear it up because they have got other things to do like not look after the railway lines for one they dont want to be bothered about litter and rubbish or peoples lives for that matter as long as the trains are running but the lines are worse than ever they are happy.I would think that rubbish and litter will be at the very bottom of there list.
  19. I was a skinhead from the 1970's to 1985,then decided to grow my hair long now I am a long haired lout who is well over 50 and if I had the chance to be a skinhead again I would say up yours.
  20. the loco was cut up at millhouses steam sheds.the story goes is that the scrap men had cut up the wrong loco the city of sheffield was going to be preserved just like the two steam engines named sheffield wednesday, sheffield united.they went to the scrap yard, if only they had saved them we could have seen the city of sheffield on the main line.
  21. I use to be a skinhead in the 1980's spent most of my time down attercliffe we always got fighting when the fair use to come on the spare ground at darnall.Brightside was another haunt of ours, going back to attercliffe we once went in the fisherman pub just off broughton lane this is going up to darnall we had never been in the pub before there was about 20 of us.We had a right shock when we walked through the door it was full of hells angels there was one bloody big battle outside I had my hand broke by a stupid long haired fella he lashed out at me with a motorbike chain thats all they was good for using weapons but revenge was ours 6 weeks later we all went back up only this time there was more of use than them I can remember one of the hairy fairys getting is hair cut there must have been 8 of the skinheads had pinned him down and somebody used a big pair of hair cutting shears on him he finnished up with hardly any hair on him.We also had a visit from some of the darnall skinheads and they got stuck in I think that 4 of the motorbikes got wrecked. The police turned up but we had legged it down to the broughton inn so even to this day I dont know what had happened to the hairy fairy who had got his hair cut free of charge. We never went back there again.
  22. Hi all I need some feed back regarding treeton railway viaduct can anybody tell me if my information what I have received at the weekend, that a new line as been put back across the viaduct also a new railway junction as gone in from the orgreave site this is off the main freight line the one that runs down from rother valley on it way to rotherham. My information I got was that there is big changes happening at the old tinsley motive power depot I know that it as been flattened and the ground as been levelled off but why should a new line go in to tinsley yard and they have put a new signal in,infact two of them as gone in I was also told that this as got something do with a new freight terminal any feed back would much appreciated as I shall go down with my camera and do some photos.
  23. when I was in camera we did a survey on the pubs of sheffield and sheffield as got more pubs than anyone else I would think that it would have had a damm sight more if they hadnt changed attercliffe common because there was a fair few on there, they use to say that if you started from the plummbers at tinsley had a half in every pub on the cliffe you would never get to the wicker arches as there was that many ale houses to be had.sheffield had got the biggest forging press it was in B.S.C thats corus to you and me the size of it was 9.000 tonnes, firth browns was only 6.000 tonnes they use to do all the big crank shafts and die bars at B.S.C. I use to work there when I first left school you could stand near them white hot ingots what they used for forging and they were big buggers.
  24. I have the same feeling I enjoyed it on pay as you go my set time was do so much then come off it now with broadband I am on the damm internet well in to the early hours of the morning,it cant be good for us do you know I spend that much time looking at my monitor that I dont watch tv now infact I dont do that much in the day because I am too knackered to do anything, and yes come the summer months when it turns warm I will be out with my camera I should be out all year round doing photos but too tired to do anything at the moment.
  25. just an idea have you thought of going back to the places where the photos was taken and doing them now to see how much sheffield as changed you could have the then and now look. the one of the walkway up to victoria station as changed a hell of a lot as as the road way where the arches is. so as sheffield midland station I wonder what year that was when the photo was taken ?
