  3. Hallamshire Aikido Club Hallamshire Aikido Club practices traditional Aikido. Our influences are many but we primarily follow the teachings of; George Forbes Sensei (Cumbria, UK), and also leading instructors from the E.A.F. (European Aikido Federation) such as Tomas and David Sanchez and Philippe Voarino from ITAF (International Takemusu Aikido Federation). In the Dojo, empty handed techniques are shown alongside armed techniques (paired weapon work and disarming) as well as Aikido in a seated position and attacks from multiple assailants. All of which is underpinned by a strong base, grounded in the foundations of Tamura Shihan, 8th Dan (An uchi-deshi of O'Sensei) Location We are based at Sheffield Springs Academy, Hurfield Road, Sheffield, S12 2SF. (Opposite the Punch bowl pub) At present, entry is via the side door to the right hand side of the building from reception. Timetable Tuesday nights from 7.30pm to 9.30pm Thursday nights from 7.30pm to 9.30pm (We ask that students arrive by at least 7.15 to change and get the room setup so we can begin promptly) Throughout the year we hold informal training sessions in parks (weather permitting) around Sheffield for members. We also have regular seminars within our association Shobu Aikido UK and visit other instructors. Your first lesson is free and classes are open to anyone over 16 years of age. All levels of ability are welcome. Costs Lessons are £5 per two hour session (£3 students/concessions) A £25 fee covers an individual’s annual membership and insurance. 4. Hehe, even if the stuff did work some of the time, surely you wouldn't go on TV and take the chance that you'd look like a berk if it didn't? Besides, that guy has nothing on the Yellow Bamboo followers... For mugs/enlightened students who would like to look into this cult/art in the uk, see http://www.yellowbamboo.info for more nonsense.
  5. There's quite a bit of this sort of stuff on youtube - Most of them mention striking GB20, a point on the Gall Bladder meridian used for acupuncture / acupressure to cause disorientation or loss of consciousness. Personally I'm not convinced until someone demonstrates it on me so I can feel it and make my own judgement. Youtube vids and live demonstrations can have stooges or at the very least suggestible partners who believe in this kind of thing and therefore go along with it some extent... Cheers, M
  6. Hi diamond123, I'm sure there will be plenty of places available where you can focus on your fitness rather than contact sparring. A quick google search shows these two places as being nearest to s13 ... Sheffield Dragons College Of Martial Arts - 34 Market Square, Sheffield, South Yorkshire - 0114 288 0300 Makenki Karate Clubs - http://www.makarate.co.uk - 153 Retford Road, Sheffield - 0114 201 4595 No idea what they'll be like, maybe other forum members have experience of them? You could try Crystal Peaks Freestyle Taekwondo, they have a ladies Kickbox class which may be of interest. - They're on Holbrook industrial estate. My own class is mixed, it's not too far from s13 (Hurlfield Road, just off the top of East Bank Road) - see the url in my signature for details. Cheers, M
  7. You could try http://www.sheffieldtherapycentre.co.uk/ they are based at Ridgeway Road.
  8. Hi, From a quick web search there are plenty around, a few are listed below but this is far from an exhaustive list. http://www.lishi.org/classes/sheffield/ - Centre & Heeley http://www.sheffieldtaichi.co.uk/ - Crookes http://www.killamarshtaichi.co.uk/ - Killamarsh http://www.tai-chi-world.com/index.php/tuitionclassesetc/57-new-classes-in-september-2010.html - Various http://www.sheffieldbuddhistcentre.org/body-mind/taichi - Commonside/Walkley Other options for internal arts (typically characterised by circlular flowing/redirecting movements as opposed to linnear strikes) are Hsing Yi or Ba gua if you want Chinese arts or Aikido for Japanese arts. Cheers, M
  9. Hi, As far as I'm aware the club teaches Shodakan aka Tomiki Aikido (competitive Aikido) and according to the EIS website practices one day a week: Junior: Thursday 6.30 - 7.30pm Senior: Thursday 7.30 - 9.30pm I've met a couple of their instructors (Steve and Martin) on the odd occasion although not practiced at their club - my advice is just to go down and try it out. There are fair few Aikido clubs dotted around the city. Cheers, M
  10. I know that Sheffield Judo Club in Grimesthorpe has some spare capacity at the moment. Their premises is permanently matted although it is a little out of the areas you've mentioned! Details: 925 Grimesthorpe Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S4 8ES 01142365419 (not sure if this is up to date) Cheers, M
  11. I recently tried one in Leeds which was excellent > http://www.ppik.net/ Me and a few mates did the 1.5 hour team endurance race, it was great fun and pretty knackering too! Well worth a shot.
  12. Hi Nebby, There's quite a few Aikido Dojos in Sheffield The nearest to you is Roger Grant's Sheffield Hallam University club, Collegiate Crescent Campus on Broomgrove Road. Grimesthorpe, Sheffield (http://www.rowanaikido.co.uk) approx 3.6 miles from Brinsworth, roughly 11 minutes journey. 14. Hi all, Does anyone know of any martial art classes suitable for a 5 1/2 year old child? Any art/discipline - no preference as yet. I'm aware that different martial arts place varying levels of strain on the body etc and so have a minimum age attached. I just wondered if anyone catered for children as young as this? Cheers,
  15. Not personally, but I imagine you could have somebodys eye out if you weren't careful when training... For everyone's education, here's how to deal with an assailant armed with a banana... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=piWCBOsJr-w
  16. Hi rip_dime Seeing as you mentioned Aikido, I run a traditional Aikido class at Waltheof sports centre off Prince of Wales road. Training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Sunday mornings. See our website http://www.hallamshireaikido.co.uk for more info. Happy New Year!
  17. There's one in Chesterfield that my girlfriend goes to. Is Chesterfield too far away though? I'll post some info about it if you're interested.
