  1. Thanks redox but bought some already now. A light sussex, a RIR and a polish (she was so damn cute) We have had 2 eggs already altho not sure who it is that is laying them. Bought from storrs poultry in oxbridge. The guy was really nice. Showed me all his stock, there was a lot to choose from. The brahma's were ENORMOUS. Have to say though, not cheep but the chickens do look really well, nice weight, glossy feathers and in good health so I suppose it's money well spent.
  2. still time to plant broad beans I think. I have bought a type called aguadulce from wilco, 99p bogof. the packet recommends planting between october and februry. hope this helps and the best of luck with your plot. I myself am not brave enough to tackle such a big project. The plots which are free nearby are far too overgrown for me to even consider but I do wish you the best of luck. hope you keep us updated on your progress and maybe you could post a few photos of before and after to offer some encouragement to us scaredy cats;)
  3. hi yellowrose, am hoping from your posts that it is the hillsbro morrisons that you have bought out of black buckets and not ecclesfield:sad: I had planned to use these this year to do a bit of an experiment using different types of potato and varying the amount of seed potatoes in each to see which produced the best yield
  4. you know, when I started gardening last year I thought that I could read a book and it would teach me everthing I need to know. HOW WRONG the more I read, well, the more I realise that gardneing is not a yes/no science. we have to adapt to the environment we are faced with and plant crops to suit this
  5. strix, you have got me thinking now. The floor in my gerrnhouse is concrete. if I could build a frame base up to the edge of the greenhose floor , then place some thick plastic on the floor, stapled on to the wooden base, I could fill it with a layer of gravel about 2 inch thick and put the pots on this. When I go away I can feed the hose into the grenhouse and leave it turned on to a trickle and this should be enough to fed the plants while I am away. Is this madness or could it work?
  6. last year we put a paddling pool up in the greenhouse, filled it up and put the pots in this. This year we are away for 2 weeks and I'm not sure the plants will survive that long as the water had already dried up after 1 week.
  7. that is disappointing as the flavour was described in the catalogue as "distinctive". which variety would you recommend for outdoors?
  8. hi there, what types of chickens do you have and how much are they? many thanks shelly
  9. I have herd that globe artichokes grown from seed can be a bit hit or miss and not always true to type. Don't quote me on that tho as I have never grown them myself, would love to as it's one of those things that you just can't buy but I don't have the room in my garden.
  10. last time my daughter and I went to jungle mania she actually bit thro the sides of her tongue because she was coming down one of the slides and another child started climbing up from the bottom. My daughter tried to throw herself sideways to avoid a collision and banged her chin. Obviously watching your own children is important but if others allow their kids to abuse the equipment then accidents will still happen. Altho I do not blame JM specifically I do feel that they should take more responsibility when it comes to monitoring the play area. They seem happy to take your money and then wipe their hands of responsibility. If they had 1 member of staff who took a few minutes ever now and then to go around the center and give a few stern words to the worst offenders then this would be a great help.
  11. Altho I have a green house this year I want to grow my tomatoes outside as I will be away for 2 weeks in the summer and will have problems with watering ect. My father in law is up for the task but his ideas on gardening and mine are not the same ( he kept sneaking into the greenhouse last year and snipping off perfectly good tomatoes whilst still green and on the vine as he said it would overload the plant THEY WERE FINE.) anyway I wanted to grow a nice big nobbly variety with a lot of taste and have seen some called marmande in suttons seeds. anyone tried thse as said to be for outside growing?
  12. my daughters grew sunflowers last year, not sure which variety but they were the kids ones you can buy in wilcos, suzie sunflower I think. we grew about 12 in pots then transfered to the garden. they all grew amazingly large, too large really because as soon as the flower heads formed they were blown over by the winds. Thankfully we managed to get a few photographs of the last 2 before they toppled over aswell. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p53/motherofesme/oldies235.jpg we never measured them cause I couldn't get up that far but they must have been well over 8 foot. beginers luckI fear:hihi: Last year in one of the gardening mags were running a comp to see who could grow the most impresssive grow bag. You could put anything in it but mostly it had to be veg, any combination. I think the idea was to make it beautiful as well as productive.
  13. I know it has been mentioned already but I like wentworth garden centre. It has a good selction of seeds, thomson and morgan, suttons along with others plus the same cheep potato seeds that wilcos stock. It has a beautiful garden for walking around and every second sunday there is a farmers market there selling organic veg, baked goods, fish, meat, pickles and cheese to name a few. I don't think it is the cheepest for plants and not sure if they propegate/ grow their own plants but it is a great afternoon out, lovely cafe with home baked goods and pet shop. There is even a little farm for the kids and a nice play area.
  14. last year we grew our strawberry plants outside in the ground. Even though we netted them the birds still got to them so we decided to dig them up and put them in pots in the greenhouse. cause of the hot weather mid summer we had to have the door open for ventilation and the b*&*y birds got in and ate them anyway!!
