Walt Machin John Machin Peter Higgins Peter Parkinson.

All the above names were given to me today by (Bill Hague also known as Canonball) incidently whos birthday it is today at the age of 78.,

He never forgets the wonderfull people and brilliant company that he worked for.

I can remember him delivering tankers of Gold Label to Bass on Claywheels Lane.If my memory is right he was very knowledgable about racehorses and If I remember he lived on Winn Gardens!

  2. Wasnt George the landlord in the Railway at Brightside? I believe he suffered a broken leg in a prank that went wrong. One of the lads jokingly kneed him in the back of his legs and he fell awkwardly

No George and Elsie Powell were the Hosts at the Bridge, their son Mick was a manager at Roxys.George used to be the coalman round Wincobank and Brightside before taking the pub.Used to have some good friends in there Danek,Johnny Steer,Bob Winslade,Ian and Phil ?Mickey Hunt,Mick Smith.

Howard Gregory Glen Gregory's father from Heaven 17 who once brought Tina Turner into the pub or so the story goes!!

  3. Loved the Forum years ago when Ken & Kitty Yates had it,Marty Caine used to do sandwiches in there!Went down to Bridge Inn then great pint of Wards and a superb old type landlord George Powell.

Can anyone remember Pheasant on Meadowhall Rd John Smiths house? Went to games night there, played first round of dominoes at 1.45 in the morning, had presentation at 5 o clock .

  4. Just to clarify it's 90p off a pint but still Sam Smith's Soverign at 86p a pint aint bad.

Just for a bit of info the house and grounds were bought for £3500 in 1921 and the committee borrowed £4000 off Wm Stones .They then had to borrow a further 1200 to furnish the club, this they got on hire purchase from Stones.

In those days the club had to buy the beer engines/pumps they weren't supplied by the breweries.

There is a great photo in the concert room of the original concert room from about 1935,with a member looking like somebody from a Charlie Chaplin film posing in it.

  5. Aye shame about the Gate Inn one less pub for The Wendies to go!

I didn't think they'd be that much room down there, the road layout will need changing? Is Fletchers the old Bachelors site?

The Gate has been shut for about four years, the plans include knocking down the Traveller's an 18th century coaching inn for a bit of steel and plastic.

Fletchers is still Fletchers ,Batchelors was about 3/4 mile further on Claywheels lane.

By the way Tesco own the triangle of land opposite the old bus garage on Herries Rd ,what will they do with that?

  6. Hello, does anyone know a good place to learn Tai Chi?

I found a few threads but they were a few years old so not sure if the info in them is still correct.

I'd like to learn it properly (the full forms) and also understand it's application as a combat style. I understand this can take many years and I'm willing to put the effort in if I find the right teacher/class.

    Thanks.

We have a Tai Chi class every Thursday morning at Wadsley Bridge Wmc at about 10.00.This is generally for people with cardiac problems!I'll ask the instructor to see if he does other classes elsewhere.

  7. One of the reasons WMC,s use agents is mainly the best turns are nearly all north west based. Therefore we can't get to see them in showcases or auditions so rely on tried and trusted agents.Another reason is the guarantee that if something happens and a turn can't appear the agent will always find a good alternative.

I am surprised though that the majority of turns haven't increased their fees for a number of years!Whether this is because there are more turns than clubs now or because clubs now run a strict budget re cost of entertainment.

One thing I have noticed is the number of novelty acts, comedians etc available has declined don't know why this is.

I have seen some great solo singers who would blind the majority on X factor, they can hold an audience for two 45 min slots, which takes some doing.

At one time there used to be auditions where concert secretaries would go and book acts without agents but these have disappeared.

Clubs are now invited to showcases where agents show off the acts on their books

  8. Dear sleepercreep next time you are in Wadsley perhaps to pay your subs, please have a word with me re beer quality etc. This has got to be more favourable than slagging YOUR club of on this forum.

The group that is on tonight Seaside Rendezvous are one of the most popular turns in clubland.

For your information at lane Top it's Something old Something New,KennyLynn and son .At Southey its Stardiz who I have no info

At Colley it''s Buddies a decent rock n roll group.

  9. Went last night and got to admit I was disappointed.

The place was not very warm,in fact one of my party kept her topcoat on.

There was only 11 people in the place including us,yet we waited 30 minutes for the starters to arrive. We had only ordered garlic bread ,garlic mushrooms and meatballs so surprised at the wait. The food though was good although overpriced.

We all had steak diane, which was excellent but all we got with it was frozen chips no veg at £15.99 it was very overpriced.I complained to the manageress whose stock reply was I've worked in lots of restuarants and they never serve veg with steak!:suspect:As we were leaving we heard her comment well they didn't leave much, course we didn't we were starving.

I now realise why there were few people in and can't see it stopping open much longer unless they change their pricing policy and also serve food to people's expectations not their perception of people's wants
