  1. Went on Friday night had pulled pork enjoyed it it ,bit dry but OK . Cornbread and coleslaw very good. But why serve it in enamel dog bowls and old tin cans ,this was lost on me! Also agree with previous poster about sat with drinkers and not in separate dining area. Also had fried pickles more batter than pickles! Would go again but my partner would'nt .

  2. Superb video could nearly smell that beer! Back in 1980s did Wards pub passport 49 pubs in north Yorkshire farthest pub was puzzled tree in Halifax . Two bad pints Sheffield arms and mill field but never mind. My local was Bridge inn on Weedon st when George Powell had it great beer and great landlord. Also good pubs were queens head ,royal oak on Hollis croft and excelsior on't cliffe. The new Wards is missing that great smell and taste . Before I pass on I would love to taste a pint of that again. I agree with previous posters blame that bitch Thatcher or we would still be supping Wards and farting and sh*ting for England

  3. Went last night ,not many customers in ,still don't like having to pay straight away.Food was warm and dried up not enough turnover! Ran out of duck went to ask when back on, ALL staff sat down eating felt as though I was intruding!!This was at 8.00 on a Friday .The men's toilets were disgusting the floor ,walls and urinal hadn't been cleaned for weeks .Makes you wonder what the kitchens like!! Off my list now of places to eat

Finally they agreed to put in the phone line first, on the 3rd April, surprise surprise they didn't turn up or let me know.Rang BT up to find what's happening it might be fitted 16th April 2and a half months after ordering.Rang virgin up installed in 2 days at a better deal. Then 8th March receive text from BT, engineers will be there on the 3rd of March what!!!

  5. I hope I'm not being pedantic but make sure on any application that its Birley Carr and Back Edge otherwise it could fall by the wayside.

I played on here way back in the 50's and it now looks a bit of an eyesore with that metal fence running up the side.

I agree with you though it should remain within the community as well the second Back Edge. Good luck in your efforts .

  6. Nearly all clubs outside of South Yorkshire charge for entertainment ,whether it's just £2 or for a good turn £5.

Jagged Edge were mentioned,on a Friday night who would be on about £500, you have to take £1500 over the bar to pay £500. At 5 pints each that equates to about 150 customers, 40 customers= £400 doesn't pay for the group .

In the North East all clubs charge for entertainment and the clubs are generally busy, as the cost of turns are covered that means that beer can be cheaper. It would take though a brave club in South Yorkshire to charge on a regular basis for entry into concert room.,

  7. Hello.

I was a teenager during the 60s in Sheffield and, as I recall the city very much smaller and more compact than today. I seem to remember that all the "in crowd" knew each other and the city centre pub/club scene was very exciting and prolific - especially towards the end of the 60s. It was quite difficult to be a Mod outwardly as we lived in a very working class environment! I recall having to gradually change into "mod" gear on the 95 bus during the journey into the City from where we lived on the Woodthorpe estate - not wise to walk around there in a Union Jack jacket at that time!! My favourite haunts were the Buccaneer on Leopold street and the Cavendish club on Queens street (saw Clodah Rodgers there in 69). There are some good books in the "local interest" sections of WH Smith and Waterstones - one in particular called "Sheffield in the 60's.

    Hope this helps

    Steve.

I can't reply to a private message yet as I'm new to the Forum. Looking back, there was very much a class based environment in Sheffield during my "mod" years. It was just expected that I would follow my Father into the steel works so when I made it clear that my interests for my future revolved around music and history, it did not go down well with both my family and many of our friends. However, you could tell there was an air of "change" around Sheffield and of course, it wasn't long before the steel industry in Sheffield went into decline. The "mod" scene became more accepted as attitudes started to change and evolve as we motored towards the 70s. My friends and I began to be much more aware of what we were "expected" to wear and the music we should be listening to from the, still relatively new, TV and programmes such as Ready Steady Go, Top of the Pops etc. These programmes very much influenced what we wore and actually how we behaved! We would watch RSG religiously every week to see what the "in" dance was that week so that we could be bang up to date when we hit the clubs and pubs that weekend (Cavendish, Buccaneer, Mojo, Black Cat (owned by Peter Stringfellow and where the then unknown Beatles played often). I could go on and on as it was a very special and vibrant time in our lives.

    Regards Steve

Cavendish ,bucaneer weren't open same time as Mojo at least 2 years after mojo shut .Beatles never appeared at Black Cat . I think that you probably had too many happy pills at that time!!

  8. I worked in the NHS for 15 years finally left due to bullying by my manager.

She had already had to leave one hospital due to bullying came to mine and carried on in the same vein. I had 7 months off with stress due to this women put a complaint in ,but it was investigated by her line manager who found her innocent!!!.Since I left another employee has been off due to her bullying and surprise surprise found innocent again.

Too many square shapes in round holes, this lady is totally inadequate for the job she holds but gets away with it time and again. The job she holds is a 20 hour post but because they don't know what to do with her made the job 40 hrs and cut down on ancillary to make the money up!!

  9. The beer orders were brought in by Margaret Thatcher in 1992,this stopped breweries owning pubs .These pubs were mainly small pubs subsidised by the breweries who didn't mind while ever they were selling a pint of their brew.

After the beer orders all major brewers were sold to foreign owners and the pubs went to property companies who only want rent .

While ever breweries had pubs they wouldn't sell beer to supermarkets at vastly reduced prices because they were the competition!!

By the way the beer orders which caused a lot of pubs to shut was endorsed by CAMRA !!!:loopy:
