  1. I used to live in Crookes and walked every day to Tapton in Darwin Lane. So in the winter a balaclava was absolutely essential, even though as a teenager it wasn't exactly fashionable. I also had a morning, evening and weekend paper round at the newsagent in Crosspool on Manchester Road, and in 2 feet of snow trudging the Sunday Times's to the posh houses round & about wasn't fun! I remember my galoshes having a hole in them so put my feet in plastic bags over my socks! Happy days!
  2. Hi John! John Habershon, I remember you, you're a year older than me I think & were in my cousin Dave Holmes class? I remember the Holdsworths at Springfield. My teacher was Mrs Tucker, but I can't remember any others. Another thing I remember was Ernest Pym (do you remember him?) peeing over the toilet wall in the playground into the girls! What's he doing now I wonder?! Regards Paul
  3. Hi David You must have been 2 years above me, I left Springfield in 64 to go to Tapton. I remember Akela of course but not her real name. The scout leader was called 'Skipper' who worked for a cardboard company. Every summer we alternated camp between Fraisthorpe near Bridlington and North Wales, travelling in the back of his van. Wouldn't be allowed now! A senior scout who helped run the troop was Ray Goodlad, who I think lived up Gleadless. I played snare drum in the scout band, St Georges day parade was always a treat. I left the scouts around 65/66 as the pubs in Sheffield and the Top Rank on Tuesday nights were becoming more exciting!
  4. I lived in Milton Street, also went to Springfield and learned to swim here in the late 50's. The baths were amazing. My abiding memory is being in the school (or may have been St Silas Scouts) swimming competition and being beaten into 2nd place in the diving competition by David Belt. Great memories.
  5. Hi, I just picked up this thread. I went to Springfield school in the 50's and 60's moving to Tapton in 1964. I lived in Milton Street, in the same yard as my cousins the Holmes family, someone mentioned Bob and Dave. I was also in the cubs and scouts at St Silas. I was christened at the church by the Rev Haythornthwaite. Friends around the area were Graham Leary who went later to Greystones school, and Paul Slingsby who went on to Waltheof. Where are they now I wonder? Amazing place to grow up, happy days. If anyone remembers me, Paul Dale, love to hear.
  6. Knitted woollen gloves and mittens were never any good to make snowballs in, the snow stuck to the wool..
  7. I had a brilliant grey one which my Nannan knitted which fell on to my shoulders. Needless to say it was a chain mail helmet which helped me beat the infidels on the red rec.
