I'm surprised it was news to you, @zach - I thought you'd have spotted the warning which were on the last two or three Flash updates, unless of course, you had it set to auto-update, in which case you probably wouldn't.

Totally missed it. Updates are on auto. Maybe a bit lazy on my part but all my PCs do a backup image every couple of days. Too many 'new features' have caused issues in the past.

A macrium restore only takes 5 minutes 😉

You are very lucky, as playing with the partitions in DiskManager like that could potentially result in the loss of all the data on your drive, and would need rebuilding and recovering...

But, i'm surprised during the Linux install, there wasn't either A) an option to install on the Windows Partition, or B) a Linux Partition Manager that would set up the drive ready to go...

at least / hlad you got it sorted though.. :)

I was tinkering with my old i5 and used a live Linux USB, the interface to install alongside Windows didn't look too friendly to new users (IMO)

Credit where credit's due. Kidorry doesn't like the 'No or can't' words 😉

  3. It's always quite expensive to build anything good from scratch. The big question needs to be asked...do you keep spending on old tech? No problem with a newer GPU but most of your other parts would have to be re-purposed. The system you have now would be a decent Plex server but I'd be trying a newer/faster GPU first.

I use ASUS, EVGA, Gigabyte and Palit GPUs, all have been good up to now. Like most companies, all the ones mentioned have budget lines. I try to avoid the cheap ones if I can. Used parts can go for silly money, compare used to new and post links if you want to. I don't have anything at the moment but I'll ask around.

  4. I remember my daughter saying she had issues on a wide monitor with a GTX970, not tried on a 1050ti but it is what it is. It's not a bad card but start throwing high resolutions at it, and it might show. You could upgrade the card but without a budget idea, it's dificult to know.

The 4th gen i5 and 8GB of RAM could also be a bottleneck in performance. I have a test machine with near on the same spec (16GB RAM) It's OK at fairly low settings but take it up to 1440 etc and it starts to crawl. The CPU and GPU are at 100% and the RAM is high.

A better card could take some of the load but it might be time to think of other parts too.

    Budget?

  5. Although my mac is newer, I run it in a fairly unconventional way.

macOS is on a Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive (macOS seems quite happy on external)

I split the internal Fusion Drive and installed Windows 10 on the 128GB SSD and set the 2TB mechanical to exFAT (So both could use it)

Getting to your question. How about installing Windows 10 on it? Just get the drivers via Bootcamp, do a Time Machine backup (just in case) Although not 100% sure, you may be able to to run your macOS from a cheapish external SSD if you needed it again. Just use the option key when you turn on to choose OS.

Do a bit of reading first, as I said, my mac is newer and it might not be an option for you but it should be OK.

    So bits needed...

    Backup macOS if you want

Get Windows drivers via Bootcamp on mac (no need to run the .exe, each driver needed can be found in the folders)

Download latest Win 10 from MS (make bootable USB)

Plug into mac and hold option key after turning mac on. Select Win 10 and Wipe all old partitions then install Win 10 on the clean drive.

** I'd keep a copy of your mac OS and run from USB if possible ** (just my opinion)

Anyone feel free to add if I missed anything, or it's different on older macs.

I have no issues at all with Windows 10 on mine. Give us a shout if you need more help.

  6. My last 3 cars have had the electronic ones. Very odd at first but very good once you get used to them. I use mine the same as I would with the handle type. Obviously no sync between the pedals and the handbrake like before. The 2 second hill start took a bit of getting used to after decades of doing things the 'old way' A couple of mistakes but all good after that.

I see the older handbrake in small cars that are usually a cheaper make/model. I like my whistles and bells in my car so the old style handbrake hasn't been an option for nearly 8 years (for me).

It's not really a 'handbrake' now, just a finger switch.

Not sure on the answer to Q2. I still call it a handbrake although it isn't really the same thing.

Either way, I like them but probably won't if they ever go wrong. I'd imagine an expensive fix.

Success at last. I decided to start from scratch again by formatting my U.S.B. and downloading Ubuntu onto it again. I then went into the B.I.O.S. and went into the advanced section to alter the boot order. Plugged in the U.S.B. switched on and it worked a treat. Now I am thinking about installing it on the P.C. Maybe after Xmas. Thanks everyone for your help. A MERRY XMAS TO EVERYONE.

Good on you. A bit of learning and sticking with it...result!

Your options are quite open now, you could just have Linux or run both from the same drive with a dual boot. You should be OK with a 240GB SSD which will make things run smoother (as mentioned above)  whichever way you decide. Just remember to do backups first, things can and do go wrong at times.

You know where everyone is if you want advice.

    Merry Xmas to you too.

  8. Probably going against a few peoples favourite but...

Fairytale of New York (The Pogues)

In my defence, I don't like any of The Pogues music. Never have and never will. I was just thinking about commercial Christmas song releases in general, most recent ones are a bit cheesy and released for drunk people on the dance floor. Not that there will be much of that this year in the clubs & pubs!

    Bah...humbug! 🙂

  9. Possibly. My mac is iMac so built in screen etc. The new TV is connected to a Windows PC, all HDR stayed off in the settings until I manually turned them on and altered them (too bright)

I was just thinking that it would be a shame if Waldo paid good money for 4K and HDR monitor, but couldn't use it. I was very surprised at the difference when you play a 'real' HDR video at 4K...very nice! 😉

The battery has already been replaced, same problem.

Did you set the time, date and boot drive when you replaced the battery? Do you get the same error if you shutdown but leave it plugged in to mains power and the power supply switch to on (if it has one)

If you have any USB storage plugged in, just try without it. It can be left in permanently if you use one, it might just need another BIOS setting altering.

  11. I recently bought a new 4k TV and had quite a few issues which all got sorted with new HDMI cables.

It's also worth checking the HDMI cable is fully pushed in the port (both ends) I've found some new HDMI ports need a bit more force to fully get the cable in the port.

Check the monitor for anything like adaptive brightness. Turn it off for now.

On the mac Mini, have you set the refresh to something like 60Hz and is there an option to turn on for HDR? Are the monitors it works on all 4k?  Before I swapped out the cables on my setup (2080Ti) it kept defaulting to 30Hz, that also caused a few problems to the screen (flicker, bad colour etc) This was an odd one, the same cable worked fine on my old 4k TV but that TV wasn't HDR or HDMI 2.1. On mine, the HDMI and power all run through the TV cable management with no problems.

I didn't want to spend silly money on HDMI cables so I ended up going by reviews and bought a pack of 3, 8k HMDI 2.1 rated ones from Amazon for about £30. They are NOT the best going, but they did solve my issues.

Not all related to your issue but the new cables sorted all the issues below on my TV...

    4k @ 60Hz  (3840 x 2160)

    HDR now works perfect

    G-Sync Compatible now showing/working

    Freesync now showing

120Hz option in games now showing

I'm not sure what you mean by "return window" with Amazon if the monitor is faulty. It should come with at least 12 months warranty, or do you mean a free return window? If you know your HDMI cable is good and the settings on the mac/monitor are right, if the problem is still there, get it exchanged/refunded.

  12. Like anything, there's cheap and there's good.

USB sticks may look the same but the speed and quality can be another thing. I've used them on my last TV as a PVR hard drive and they seemed to work OK. The last one I used was a 256GB Sandisk USB 3.0. For a bit more cash you could buy a 2.5" SSD and a USB to 2.5" SATA adaptor. This would work much better but you'd have to double check the TVs USB can run it OK.

Can't say I ever tried to pause TV on one. That could be a weak spot.

The TV make and model, and which USB stick would help to know.

He is even funnier when he tries to talk Posh, Sounds like Mrs Bucket, infact don't we all.   :hihi:

I can't say I've ever heard him do the posh talk. To me he has a well spoken Sheffield accent, with the twang still in there, why even try to change it?

I won't hear a bad word said against Mrs Bucket, she was royalty...you're out of line! 😄

I can feel a post deleting coming on. Apologies to Strictly fans, I promise to do my best and not go off topic...again.

Love Sean Beans accent. I like that he doesn’t try to change it whatever part he is playing.

Maybe not your thing but his attempt at an American accent in Silent Hill was hilarious! Get those R's really rolling Sean!! 😄

    i have a ipisb-ch2 motherboard with an 17 2600 prosser ddr 3 ram 16gig a gtx 740 graphics card and a few harddrives

600wat power suply  but cant get to bios only a screen saying press ecsape to start it was in a hp phoenixany help will help

and if anything **** can i get new motherbord and reuse the i7

Looking at the board, it looks like a standard Micro ATX size. You should find one on eBay, just make sure you buy one with the right CPU socket. All the parts you mention should work on another motherboard with no issues.

A lot of posts about graphics cards causing boot issues on that board. Might be worth removing the GPU and see if you can access the BIOS. You could also remove the power lead and remove then replace the CMOS battery, or cross the CMOS reset jumpers on the motherboard. This will reset the BIOS and may trigger it for you to enter the BIOS and change the settings you want...date, time and boot drive etc.

  16. You say "last few weeks"  Was it OK before that or a bit slow back then?

Obviously the first choice would be an SSD, but...

    First, try the items below.

    Full virus scan

    Malware scan

    OS updates

    Disc clean up

Also, post a bit more info on the system...CPU, RAM and OS/version etc etc.

The extra info will help us to help you 😉

  17. As above really,

It won't alter how your PC works, it will show the WiFi adaptor and you'll have the option to use wireless network. Depending on the WiFi adaptor, you might notice the internet/network over WiFi  is slower than the wired connection. It's not a fault, just the speed some adaptors or internal cards run at.

I wont be buying any either :hihi:,    like  I  mentioned,  it was supposed to be a really serious ad but came across as the funniest ad I have seen in while, :hihi:

    But don't forget...no chafing!! 😄
