Mobility vehicles...info wanted

Just registered today and thought i would respond to this debate. I am a wheelchair user and get the higher rate of DLA. I also used to be a senior manager for a National car hire firm in Sheffield, doing work for motability.

I do not have a Motability vehicle!

I made this decision based on my knowledge and research. It depends on an individuals situation if the Motability scheme is a benefit.

The web site for Motability gives all the info needed. The Mobility part of the DLA is used and you may have to contribute extra if the vehicle you select costs more, and money upfront. (e.g. anything bigger than a vauxhall corsa) the prices are listed with all the vehicles.

All the majour manufacturers do vehicles under the mobility scheme.

It is basically a lease agreement. You lease the vehicle.

I had many customers who had cars through Motability who thought they had a free car! little did they know that their mobility part of the DLA was paying for it and they could have had the money instead.

My advice would be to look at 2 options. Having a Motability car and loosing all your mobility part of DLA and perhaps contributing extra. but on the positive you will get a brand new car for 3-5 years lease. no insurance costs, no tax, and no basic maintenance costs.

However you are contracted in to 3-5 years. and if the car gets dammaged you still have a £75 excess per pannel to pay when the car goes back.

Or you may be able to afford to buy a car yourself. (i.e. get a loan) this means you will also get a brand new car, have a warranty on it to cover most problems in first few years, you will pay less(motability charge about 13% apr), and the vehicle will be yours at the end. Tax is free if the vehicle is used for a disabled person. You will have to pay for insurance.

Something to consider,

A basic vauxhall corsa

Mobility £40 /week (DLA allowance)

= £2080 /year

= £6240 / 3year contract.

+ any dammage to car costs £75/pannel)

You can buy a car cheaper than that! I DID!

I agree, I dont like the way the scheme works! It looks good on paper but in reality you end up more out of pocket. I've just got a new car (well not new but you know what I mean!) I saved up my sons DLA and bought it off ebay, luckily my partner is a mechanic so he could check I wasnt getting ripped off, and I now have a car with a big boot suitable for his wheelchair

Just another point to consider. If the vehicle is for the specific use of a disabled person and has been modified for the use of a disabled person, e.g. lift, hoist, ramp, hand controls, etc, then it is VAT exempt. and you can buy the vehicle without paying the VAT. Also any adaptations you do to a vehicle for a disabled person or any equioment, are also VAT exempt. :hihi:

Also if you need to repair the adaptations at a future date they are also VAT exempt. I found it difficult to get cheap insurance on an adapted vehicle. The best I got was through Chartwell Insurance. Obviously if its not adapted it is alright. We looked at Motability for our vehicle but the local dealer gave us a lower rate and a smaller deposit. My husband uses the vehicle , a renault van for taking tents and equipment to scout camps and we have 3 children. I've heard of people who leased who have had the equivalent of huge fines for small scratches on the bodywork. I didn't want the worry. Now we buy ex leased vehicles which have been well looked after and half the price of new.

The Disability discrimination act (DDA) means insurance companies cannot charge more for disability adaption. My advise would be to get a quote and not tell them about the disability adaption. Then tell them at the end. They should not change their quote (as long as the vehicles performance has not been modified). I tried it this year and it worked for me. ( I have an Astra with Hand Controls, but it should not matter if you have a wheelchair lift etc either).

a question about motobility, is it true that you can use the scheme and DLA money to buy a touring caravan? And before certain people jump on my back, using a tourer is the easiest way for us to go on holiday as we can stop as and when needed and ensure all equipment and medication is there and in the right place ect ect. Our current tourer has just about had it and I'm not sure if we can stretch to another just yet! Thanks in advance!

if you lease a car through motability, then you insurance is also covered.

depending on how many bumps etc you have had, if you buy outright from elsewhere than motability, you could be stung over insurance, so it may be as wide as it is long, financially.

you need to get a quote for both ways, and look at the swings and roundabouts, and work out which method will be most beneficial.

The best thing for you to do would be to phone the Motobility or email them. Details at http://www.motability.org.

Give them your phone number and they wil call you back.

They are very helpful, understanding and easy to talk to.

Good Luck
