Linda Brooks
Never went to the Ark, but picking up on what you said Ruperts mum, do you go to any venues now for Northern soul? It’s massive in the North west where I live now and can visit a venue every weekend, if I wanted to.
Donside 6
The Ark was one of the first venues that also got me into a 55yr obsession with this music. I moved to Manchester in 1970, where there was a lot more clubs playing Northern. I haven't been to any do's for a while, but I still keep in touch with the scene.

The twins were Peter and Paul Metcalfe with younger brother Timmy. Timmy eventually became a pub landlord I believe. Mick was very much the guy who got The Ark going. He went on to run Highway 61. The early DJs alongside me were Paul Metcalfe and Neville Johnson. Poor Neville drowned in a swimming pool on holiday; few will remember him as he probably only DJ’d for a year or so. He was a gem. I’m the little guy with glasses protected by Big Dave! But that’s another story! Ps I still have a hundred or so records many with “The Ark” stamp on them. Also the original Garrard SP 25 Mark IV decks. Edited December 11, 2023 by Andy M Additional info.
geotom
Loved going to The Arc, late 60's, fantastic music, also a band that played there, Love or Confusion, think the lead singer/guitar was Phil Brodie, did a few good Hendrix numbers. Andy M
Yep. Love or Confusion we’re regulars along with Jigsaw and a dj from radio Sheffield who did a scary set with him rising out of a coffin ripping “the guts” out of a fellow band member then throwing his guts “raw liver” around. What on earth were they called? We also did a few all nighters.
geotom
Would that have been Frankenstein and the Monsters, lead singer Ray Stewart, later of Radio Hallam?
Andy M
Absolutely. Ray is/was a tall stocky chap with a terrifying set of teeth. Even without his signature makeup - not a lad to bump into on a dark street! He was already Radio Hallam when he appeared for us. Slim was a regular clubber. We had a 6’6’’ copper who looked after us. I had to stand on a chair to change the exit sign bulb. His head was in line! He had a great viewpoint to spot dodgy deals! Somewhere I have photos of the Ark. Another day I will find them. Edited January 1 by Andy M
