Can anyone suggest what is the problem with my heating please?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My house heating is working fine. But one of the room downstair is not heated as it should be. It is not getting warm (the radiator is working but not as warm as it should be). The thermostat on the radiator is on max. and there is no air trapped in the radiator. Can anyone suggest what is wrong?

Thank you in advance.

It may need flushing or it may be a problem with the pump.

You say the radiator is warm but not as warm as it should be?

Can you do a little simple investigation? When the 'only warm, not hot', radiator is on is it only hot at the top & as you move you hand down the radiator does it go to stone cold? This may indicate that it's full ofl black sludge. A quick indicator is when you bleed the raidator into some tissue is the water black coloured? The remedy would be to have the radiator removed & flushed. A jet wash through the holes until the water runs clear does the trick.

If the radiator feels warm all over top to bottom it could be a balancing issue with the valves. Basically a radiator has a demand valve (usually thermostatic) & a balance valve sometimes known as a lockshield valve. This other valve will look like it just has a white cap & be non adjustable. This other valve balances the system usually to a 20 or 30 degree difference. Pipe thermostats will allow for accurate adjustment. If it's screwed down too much (underneath the white cap) the water can't get out, if it's open too much the water doesn't stay in the radiator long enough.

Saying that some people do put thermostat valves on 'returns' so be careful.
