Any schools in Sheffield with provisions for autistic children?

Recommended Posts

it depends entirely whether your child needs mainstream or special education how bad his autism is etc you need a statement of special needs to get in a ir unit or special school, i live in s8 my son is autistic and he goes to birley spa intergrated resource that is for autism and serves the south side of the city nook lane is the same for the north if your child has severe autism the other schools would be the rowan at totley or mossbrook but the rowan is solely for autism and mossbrook is mixed with autism, downs learning difficulities etc but they dont like putting children in the above if they arent severe and have language skills the ir units are only for junior school children not infants so bear that in mind aswell but some autistic children do manage in mainstream with the right support.

I agree, many children with difficulties can attend mainstream school given additional support.

Hope all goes well xxx

Depends on the level of autism really. The Rowans is a brilliant school but is aimed at children with more secere autism. Nook lane at stannington has a brillinat integrated resource unit

your local school may be able to provide extra support for your child depending on how severe the autism is, my son could not attend mainstream he becomes very stressed in large groups he attended wharncliffe side from nursery age this was set up by the doctors at ryegate they will help in any way they can he now attends nooklane intergrated resources at stannington and i must say they are absolutley brilliant but is for children from y3 to y6 i am currently looking at senior schools for him, if your child has to attend a school different to your local school because of special needs then transport would be provided to and from school

anyone else had this email

Dear Faye,

Please excuse me taking the liberty of emailing you. I saw your post on the Sheffield Forum, offering advice about a school for children with autism.

My partner, May, is researching the emotional lives of children with autism for her PhD at Sheffield University. May is autistic herself and when she was a child the prognosis from her teachers was that she was retarded with little prospect for achievement. Now at 36, she has a masters of education and is studying for her PhD . May has worked in Taiwan for 14 years teaching children with special needs, written several books on autism and worked as a consultant to the Taipei Board of Education.

Sorry to go on, the reason for my email is that May needs to find parents of children with autism who would be willing to help with this very important research. It would involve three one hour interviews, with the parents only, and taking some notes in a diary of observations that are made during the period (3-6 weeks total).

You may be aware that a considerable portion of the medical community and others consider that children with autism do not experience emotional lives, (the DSM-IV is evidence of this), which could result in treatment accordingly. May's research will contribute to the body of knowledge on this subject.

The requirement is for the parents of a non-verbal child with autism less than 6 years old.

If you think you would be interested in participating, or know someone who would, please drop me a line or call me.

Once again sorry for the intrusion.

Best regards,

Robyn Smith

you could look at the new Brantwood school.

http://www.rmet.org.uk/brantwood/

Brantwood is initially only going to have a dozen pupils, & will make provision only for statemented chlidren on the spectrum with very complex needs who would otherwise have to go out of area.

Where did you find that information out?
