Ms Macbeth   76 #37 Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Stanley Spencer fridge magnet? Whoever thought those would be a good idea needs sacking straight away. That would save the council some money.  The Graves has some seriously good art. Here's my favourites including the Stanley Spencer, who is one of my favourite artists, possibly even my favourite artist:  http://www.mylearning.org/learning/20th-century-artists-in-the-graves-art-gallery/ssStanley-Spencer---Helter-.jpg  http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NvJkT6g7wmg/TFaIiX57MkI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/45H-xtxnL5Q/s1600/derbyshire+walls+-+harry+epworth+allen+%281894-1958%29.jpg  http://www.illusionsgallery.com/Hours-Burne-Jones-L.jpg  The other one I wanted to post, but couldn't find online was the crucifixion painting of Christ carrying the cross. It's mediaeval, but it looks almost modern.  I missed this thread earlier! I love the helter skelter in the first link.  I like the Graves too, I have a favourite picture there, by Henri le Sidaner. I like the warmth of the light from the window of the house. It feels like an invitation to come home. http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/painting_202429/Henri-Eugene-Augustin-Le-Sidaner/Nemours-Seine-at-Marne  I really hope we keep it along with the Central Library. Fantastic deco building. Edited March 5, 2011 by Ms Macbeth
 Share this content via...

Fantastic deco building.  I'm sitting here, sipping coffee from my Central Library mug! Yes it's a great art deco building.  The Sam Taylor-Wood photograph is worth a look in the gallery. peakma   10 #40 Posted March 5, 2011 It would be a real shame to shut it. I am 33 and grew up in Sheffield, but now live in Derbyshire. I loved western park museum as a child, I can still walk around most of it in my head as it was... Now,I have 3 children, and we visited the museum once after it was done up, and it was awful in comparison, none of us have ever had the urge to go back. Sheffield is rubbish for free cultural days out. My 12 year old recently had a school free day, so we went to the Graves, it was better than nothing, but as far as other art galleries I have visited in other cities, nationally and internationally it is a very small collection. When I was his age I also liked to pop in at the Ruskin, when I went to town. I liked this painting,at the Graves, it is just up the road from where I live now. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NvJkT6g7wmg/TFaIiX57MkI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/45H-xtxnL5Q/s1600/derbyshire+walls+-+harry+epworth+allen+%281894-1958%29.jpg
 Share this content via...
taxman   12 #41 Posted March 5, 2011 Well it was the art galleries that caused the financial meltdown in the first place so it's only fair they feel the brunt of the cuts.  Or I may be confusing them with banks.....
 Share this content via...
espadrille   10 #42 Posted March 5, 2011 No need to worry. The Graves will not be closing.  http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/news/local/graves_gallery_will_not_close_promise_sheffield_council_1_3101299
 Share this content via...
Mimi83 Â Â 10 #43 Posted March 5, 2011 If it's true, it's such sad news ... i was at the Graves just last week ... it's breathtaking ... unfortunately a handful of display units have fallen into disrepair ... i hope they find sufficient funding to get them up and running again ... I also think it would help to promote the gallery more vigorously ... maybe dedicate a gallery's section to quarterly contemporary art exhibitions or something similar ... you can spend hours roaming around there and it still feels like hardly a moment has passed. Sigh!
 Share this content via...

The Graves will not be closing. http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/news/local/graves_gallery_will_not_close_promise_sheffield_council_1_3101299  Hmm, maybe I'm being cynical, but those words in the first sentance "Sheffield Council pledged......" do not fill me with confidence. markwrig   10 #45 Posted March 5, 2011 Well, I just got back from a to Graves. I also visited the Millennium Gallery. Going from Graves to the Winter Garden area is a bit like stepping out of the National Gallery into Tesco.  One of the gallery areas in Graves is closed because the roof is leaking. Once empty, you notice the art deco features in the building.  Speaking to one of the staff, they don't know if it will close or not, so the Sheffield Telegraph seems to know more than the people who work there!!
