sushi   10 #1 Posted October 9, 2010 So, we've decided to get another dog after we lost Pedro to old age in February. We have decided on a Labrador pup, and we will be getting her next April. So we have plenty of time to prepare. Pedro was my first dog, but I got him when he was 2 years old. He wasnt very well socialised as a puppy I think, he was used as a stud and kept separate from the other dogs. So he didnt like certain other people (at random seemingly) didnt like other dogs, cats etc. And even though he would obey commands alot of the time, he would ignore them whenever he felt like it. Luckily being a chihuahua he was quite easy to control by picking him up. Now because of the potential problems of improper training, we want to spend the time while waiting for new pup gaining the knowledge that we need to make her a fantastic companion. So if anyone can recommend any books, training guides etc that would be fantastic. Also anyones personal experiences are welcome. As much info as possible is what we need. Thank you! x
 Share this content via...
Lotti   10 #2 Posted October 11, 2010 I currently have someone coming to my classes to watch and 'help' where she feels comfortable doing so because she wants to get a dog but is inexperienced with them.  I'll have another course starting in January should you wish to come along and glean what you can from it  Just let me know if it sounds like it may be helpful and well done for preparing in advance! (Can't say it without sounding patronising but I don't mean to!)  I also have a list of books but as it's late, I'm tired and not near my reading list, I'll have to add these another time! sushi   10 #3 Posted October 13, 2010 Hi Lotti. Cheers for the reply! I have experience with dogs but I havent trained a pup, so i may have a think about popping along to your course a bit nearer the time. Haha it wasnt taken as patronising, I bet there are many people who dont take the time to find out how to train their dog and end up with bad behaviour. curly_locks   10 #6 Posted May 31, 2011 Gwen Bailey The Perfect Puppy is a good basic guide, I also think the Complete Idiot's guide to positive dog training is well worth reading. Ian Dunbar always come highly recommended, although I haven't read any of his.
 Share this content via...
