Texas Hold Em Poker

Recommended Posts

talk about narrow minded view on poker. people who dont fully understand it are all the same, movies giving the impression you will lose your house etc. :loopy:

hi hursty people seem quite passionate about texas, anymore info mate... why do you love it, do you love it for the money or just winning, or both... what makes this game so addicting??

Also, in your opinion, do you think its an ego thing... when people win... is it like in some industries, where by where theres competion... some people think that there the best... hope that makes sense?

Do you think phycology plays a big part, if so how much on a % basis?

Sorry to be a pest lol

this might sound a silly question, but is there any terminology for getting your a..e kicked? or basically getting hammerd?

If a player is unlucky to get beaten, i.e they were ahead when the money went in but their oponent got lucky then this is known as a 'beat'.

When it happens to me it is known as a 'bad beat'.

Another term for you is 'dominated' when the cards are shown before the flop and one player has a significant advantage (AA vs 55, or AK vs K10) that person is said to be dominated. It's actually really hard to explain this stuff in total layman's terms.

I like the following statement (not mine but I can't remeber the originator)

"They say that Texas Hold 'em takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master, but this is not true. It actually takes 20 minutes or so to learn and you will NEVER EVER master it."

I regard myself as being on the poker journey. I've stopped playing online because I can't be bothered to play at very low stakes and do not have the bankroll for more meaningfull amounts.

I now only play live, normally at the Gcasino, less so at Napolean's these days. I also go to Dusk Till Dawn which is the mecca of UK poker IMO. I've taken down repectable tournaments there and my biggest win was just over £3k. I've also played in Las Vegas a couple of times, not in the world series. I'd recomend this to any player that had the opportunity.

I regard myself as a better than average amateur. One thing I really like is that I first played a live casino tournament just over a year ago. At the time I was fairly nervous, a little intimidated and didn't really speak to anyone or get involved.

It's really nice that most of these crusty old grinders now know me by name, respect my ability and although I wouldn't say they were friends - I only see them in Casinos, it's nice to see them on the circuit and chat regularly and be accepted within the clique.

the game is great, i have played for the last 6 years, started on william hill but now i play pkr site. been to live games at the casino but that does not work for me! (they serve budwieser)and tourney last hours, i tend to get plastered!! and make silly plays whilst everybody else sips there coffee, still a good night tho. i just find it easier to play online i play £30 or $50 sit and go games i do pretty well, i earn £1000 per month easily and have done for a while now however in my early stages of playing i started str8 out on £5 games and lost alot of £5 games but i honestly feel i have won more than i have lost its good now because i am far more consistent and i have matured as a player by the way i only play tournements never cash tables i see that as gambleing and i do not gamble as a rule. so yes its a brill game if i had to give advice it would be if your going to play ......do not chase!!!!!! if its not in the flop simply fold your cards.

but the pros and the stats completely rubbsih this claim? if you chase draws with the correct odds then overall you will profit from it more than lose.

exactly , any pro will tell you cash game is the real mans poker not tournaments with the element of blind times forcing alot MORE gamble. Hence why alot of pros dont care about the big WSOP with thousands of players in. They make there bread and butter playing with skilled high stakes cash game players, with there own rules for example running a draw twice or 3 times to again done generally to give the game less swings on gamble and try favor the best hand winning.

Usually when you have matured as a player you understand pot odds and value and realize cash game is real poker using alot more strategy with calculations than a tournament as pros say tournaments is more on "feel and guts"

Also the random tip saying "do not chase, if its not in the flop simple fold your cards"

thats just not useful info at all, you cant sit there hoping to flop a flush or a str8 AND even if you did, you most likely wont take a big pot in most cases.

Like Hurstyowl has said about your chasing tip. Its about making the right play using profitable strategy.

Thats why choose cash game over tournaments everytime, as I matured as a player I started to realise tournament is the gamblers game. However it is fun tho! :)

alot of gamble in cash games is ludacris, you sit down with 100 big blinds and you can just relax without being forced to go allin etc, in a tourny your going to be risking your stack on several occasions in which your going to have to have the luck on your side, you get forced to do stuff you would not normally do. cash is where the moneys at, tournies are where the dreams at, you play them hoping to hit it big one time in one.

Ok, i am not a proffessional player, if you have nothing in the flop then why chase it ?? fair enough if you flop a pair or you could hit a belly buster, then yes bet if you can afford to have a look at the turn. this is what makes poker great.....

in tourny poker, the idea is to end up in a paid seat so my advice to any new player in tourney that has not got much money to lose would be to fold your cards if you have nothing at the flop stage! also i would say not to play anything less than a 10 and never ever play 7-2 worst hand in poker!! this may see you to a paid position.

now i have played less than 10s and 7-2 and have won the hand through bluffs but a proffesional player would not play these hands in most cases

cash games are soooooo different there is no skill involved in these games IMO it just gambleing . i think what the problem is is this if you start your poker days off playing tourneys like i did and after 12months got tempted to the cash table it is very difficult to adapt to the style of play IMO, where as those that start off with the cash table just come to a torney and lose chips through gambleing and then whinge that theres no skill when they got out smarted by the regular tourney players LOL.

Look i am not wanting to have this thread in a big what style is better cash or tourney i have played both and both can be very entertaining just be careful if you have not much money to LOSE . but i would love to take hurstyowl and wufu to poker skool and show you the differnce in cash play and tourney play...... so get your finger out and arrange somet LOL if your men enough !!!! phwooorhahahaha

theres no skill invovled in cash games HAHAHA id love to hear you say that to 100 pros in vegas and see how many agree with you, ill put money on it being none.

do you watch the pros play, wsop highlights? they play all sorts of hands, not just the premium hands, if you just played the good hands you could be waiting a long time, then when you finally get one you have the image of being a rock and dont get any action. your coming out with some comedy gold lol your right in what you say about adapting your game, but completely wrong about being no skill in poker, if there is no skill why is it the top players continue to make their money from it?

poker school lol, i know what the difference is between both and appreciate both are good in their own respects, i play cash to make money, and play tournaments for the excitement and the thrill of chasing the big prize.

okso you have 8-9 hearts, flop comes 6-7-3 with 2 hearts on the flop, you have flopped an open ended straight draw and a flush/straight flush draw. your telling me that if the guy bets and your getting the correct odds to call with the amount of outs you have, that you would fold?
