grafikhaus74
Anybody believe these? 2.2m? or are they, like all statistics this lying government put out - education, crime, immigration etc. - totally bogus? There's around 2.7m on Incapacity Benefit and even Labour reckon 2m are scamming. Anyway, there was a letter in the Star last week where somebody stated that: You are on Contribution-based JSA for 6 months, then you go on to Income-based JSA. He claimed that only people over 25 and on Contribution-based JSA count as 'unemployed'. After the 6 months, you don't reckon in the unemployment figures! Anyone confirm this? Titanic99
Anybody believe these? 2.2m? or are they, like all statistics this lying government put out - education, crime, immigration etc. - totally bogus? FFS, there's around 2.7m on Incapacity Benefit and even Labour reckon 2m are scamming. Hope this answers your question, interesting to note that on both counts we have reached the point under this Government where things are as bad as they were under the best times of the previous Government. So if you think they are bad now, then just remember they were a lot worse for most of the time under the Tories. Figures April 22 2009 - The unemployment rate rose to 6.7% - up 0.6% over the quarter and 1.5% on last year. 29.3 million people were in work in the period December to February according to the labour force survey (LFS). The number of people employed fell by 126,000 this quarter and down by 227,000 on the last year. The working age employment rate is 73.8% - down 0.4% on the last quarter and down 1.1% on the last year. ILO-defined unemployment in December to February was 2.1 million (6.7%) - up by 177,000 unemployed on the quarter and 486,000 from this time last year. The claimant count for key out-of-work benefits was 1,464,100 in March - up by 73,700 on last month, and up 672,100 on last year. Difference between the two Official estimates of unemployment are produced by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) based upon the ILO (International Labour Organization) definition. A separate series - the claimant count - measures how many unemployed people are claiming unemployment-related benefits. There is a large difference between the two series, and although they move broadly in line often one measure increases while the other falls. The reason for this is simply that they measure different things. Unemployment is a count of jobless people who want to work, are available to work, and are actively seeking employment. The ILO definition is used internationally, so comparisons between countries can be made, and it also allows for consistent comparisons over time. Unemployment is calculated using data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), so it is subject to sampling differences. The claimant count measures only those people who are claiming unemployment-related benefits (Jobseeker's Allowance). It is always the lower measure because some unemployed people are not entitled to claim benefits, or choose not to do so. Benefits rules vary over time and between different countries, so it is more difficult to make comparisons. The claimant count comes from the administrative records of Jobcentre Plus (formerly Employment Service), and is available earlier than the LFS-based unemployment data. grafikhaus74
Blimey! No wonder Brown can get away with it. If you believe those mangled figures you probably believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden. But wait! It's all Maggie's fault, innit? Titanic99
Blimey! No wonder Brown can get away with it. If you believe those mangled figures you probably believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden. But wait! It's all Maggie's fault, innit? Please don't spoil my good mood, my little team from East Belfast have just beaten the wealthy IFA supported dirt from South Belfast to the Championship. Anyway, on topic. You asked for information on how Unemployment was calculated, I gave you the information you asked for but don't blame me for it not being what you wanted to see. Now if you think the figures are wrong, then you either believe they've been consistently miscounted over the last god knows how many years, or you believe that all the Civil Servants who publish these figures are involved in a massive conspiracy to help the Government. I suggest that if you believe that either of these are happening, then it is more likely that you believe in fairies and not my good self.
green_god
Unemployment at 2.2 million? I assum this down't include the 3 million who are on Incapcity Benefit. Then you have to realise that New Labour have been blessed with the most stupid electorate since time began, lets look at the facts 1) Sadams WMD, 45 minutes to wipeout - in reality after digging in Sadams country for that last few years, not even a water pistol has been found. 2) Colin Powel holding up the test tube and saying "this amount of anthrax could kill millions - in reality, no anthrax was ever discovered, and so Sadam could not have killed millions. There was a rumour that the yellow liquid in the test tube was President of Honolulu's urine. 3) the great housing boom - in reality..... thats the one where you needed 6 times your salary to afford a one bedroomed flat, or the one where, 6 mates on full time wages needed to club together to buy a decent home. 4) Global warming - droughts predicted when in reality citys got flooded in the middle of summer. The Global Warming taxes that were generated had to be quickly "renamed - Climate Change taxes" as all of a sudden global warmimg had to be renamed Climate Change......... This meant it snowed in winter, rained in Autum and everyone thought we were doomed. 5) Unemployment - the lowest since 1970, If you didn't include the part time jobs, the temp jobs, all the students on non courses at University, all the people on Government training schemes, the 3 million plus on incapacity.........etc..... the list goes on............ then yes unemployment was the lowest since 1970. Titanic99 - you are right, the official unemployment stats were lower than when Maggie was in office (thats the stats, not the reality) The general public are indeed more stupid than Hoptomosis........Hoptomosis, famously went onto Noahs Ark to ask the Lions what they wanted to eat on their journey. Hoptomosis went into the Lions enclosure and mysteriously vanished.

green_god
Can you produce the stats on the reality then? In Maggies Time if you were on the dole, you were included in the stats, and that was the 3m. In the 1990s, people began to be shuffled onto incapacity benefits and other stunts were pulled to reduced the stats. New Labour came in and did a cracking job of fooling the electorate, even into believeing the unemployment stats were the lowest for over 30 years, and people believed it
green_god
Think this list kind of confirms the amount on incapacity http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4225991.stm Now I may have a brain the size of an Ants Dropping, but even I know that 2.2million + 2.67 million will come to a higher number than 3 million under Mrs T
epiphany
It always makes me laugh when people, rightly so, acknowledge the deceptions and failing of the new Labour establishment, yet in the same breath sing the praises of another bunch of neo-liberals who had an utter contempt for labour, skill, and all the things that produce the wealth of this nation. New Labour is a pseudo-socialist hangover from the destructive, degenerate ideology Thatcher initiated in this country, and I will despair if EITHER the tories or Labour get voted in next election. Very true, the problem is many people have fell for New Labours spin. Under Mrs T, things were not good, but at least there was honesty. While they were pooing on the workers, people thought "what a bunch of gits"", under New Labour, the workers have been dumped on/duped, yet everyone has been thinking "What a fantastic bunch" Sadly the chickens are beginning to come home to roost "british jobs for british workers" as an example.... we know how hollow that claim was, and what the reality is now
