Building next to 24-hour Tesco, Infirmary Road

Recommended Posts

what year did the infirmary stop being a major hospital like the ngh & rhh. and what year did it close altogether?

There was a gradual move of 'outpatient' departments from the RI to the Hallamshire from 1979. Not sure of the actual closure date. BTW the hospital was much bigger than the remaining building. There were 3 buildings the size of the one remaining, plus many auxiliary buildings.

How things have changed - in the late 70's there were THREE Accident and Emergency departments in Sheff - the Royal on West Street, the Infirmary and the Northern Gen so no one was very far from one. I worked on A&E at the Infirmary when I first qualified and it was fun! We had few problems with violence - our only protection at night was a porter. By eck, them were the days!

A and E at the Infirmary closed in 1979 and transferred to the Hallamshire so there were still 2 Casualty departments making a casualty department relatively easy to get to for most people.

The roundhouse now has a canteen called a&e so i presumed that a&e was originally based in that building, norwich union lease most buildings and the Nhs have centenary house which offers childrens services as already mentioned.
