Smack Jack
I just wondered if anyone knew a little about the Borough Mews/Gibbs Yard buildings on Bedford Street. Google is not my friend with this and will not yield me an answer. There clearly is much new build on the site but there are also a couple of conversion blocks. They look Georgian to me and I figure must have a former industrial use?
retep
Used to be Tomlinsons undertakers and Taxi's before Gibbs builders, Whoooooo! don't look behind you.
mollie
my husband used to work at Gibbs builders, there was a welding shop owned by Len Oldfield, an undertakers and Gibbs yard. it was Gibbs that built the Borough Mews development before moving on to their new place Nunnery Drive a few years ago. Smack Jack
I'd love to see an original photo or site plan with details of what the buildings were used for and whats been knocked down. Does anyone know what the two original buildings that remain standing were actually used for (I assume they are original and have not been built to look like conversion is the other builings are clearly of new design)

Smack Jack
Thanks for that. That is a good picture. Doesnt reveal all though! I wonder what the ramp is for half way the side of the building. To move horses presumably but I'm not sure why they would be going up there in the first place? I have posted the picture link below although I'm not sure whether it will work with the nature of the site its from. Any more information I would love to know:) http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/cgi-bin/zoom.pl?picture=http://www.picturesheffield.com/jpgh/s09978.jpg

Buttercup88
Wow glad I've found this, thanks Smack Jack! I've lived there for the past year and always wondered what it used to be! Would also love more info.
retep
Just a little bump for this as I would love to know more:) My grandfather more than likely worked there, and was married from there in the year shown on the picture 1895, nice coincidence. hennypenny
I remember being told that there was an elephant which worked at Tommy Ward's Brewery, and as it was too big for their stables it was stabled at Tomlinsons - maybe that is what the ramp was for
