How's about somebody who really likes meat but doesn't like the idea of animals needing to be killed for their eating pleasure?

That’s why vegetarian sausage, bacon, burgers and Linda McCartney  meat free lasagne etc have been on the go for years. Laboratories are working hard to find meat free meat to appeal to carnivores to try and reduce real meat consumption

  2. I get priority access to supermarket delivery as am classified as extremely vulnerable due to chronic lung disease and have been advised to stay in my home (no outside exercise) for 12 weeks at least.  After registration, as per the Government letter, it was 4 weeks before access to supermarket delivery was confirmed and I received very basic food parcels in the intervening period. I am normally self sufficient and people might wonder why I’m getting deliveries- perhaps some of the people or family members observed have similar classified

    conditions.

There are numerous local and national organisations who have CRB checked volunteers who will collect shopping lists, deliver goods and be able to accept cash or debit/credit card payment. The supermarkets are giving priority access as per government lists and to others often accessing slots in overnight. I don’t understand the correlation between being ‘out of work/self employed’ and still being able to ‘afford deliveries’

I do believe its right that anyone going shopping at the moment should primarily be buying food, but if there are other things available to buy then if people are happy to stay in the shop for longer then I dont see why they shouldn't buy it, just my own personal opinion...I cannot see why shops would have things on sale then be surprised and complain when people buy it.

There’s no generic ‘essential’ purchases. What’s essential for a young family will be completely different for an older single person. We’re not on ration so if shops are selling and an individual wants to buy why shouldn’t they be able to.  Well done Bob for contacting the store, even though you’ve not made a formal complaint I think the guard will have had some ‘staff training’

Are you friendly at all with any of these neighbours? I’m sure if you asked one of them you know they’d get a few bits in on their delivery.

    Use another pharmacy!

Difficult  to change now when this month’s prescription has been issued to Boots electronically by doctor and they won’t issue another this month. I will change once I get the medications.

Not sure what you mean about friends/neighbours getting a few bits in their deliveries??????

  5. Boots have been terrible about repeat prescriptions. I normally collect but when I had shielding letter I rang Boots at Hillsborough and, despite letter stating chemists were being paid to deliver free, they insisted I would have to pay £5 per delivery. Signed up for on line free delivery, ok fist time but this time nothing arrived 2 weeks after prescription issued by doctor. Took 3 days to get though on phone and then passed between phone numbers. Got through today again after 2 more days and with only 2 days of medicine left only to be told prescription not even dispensed yet. Agreed to do it urgently but won’t arrive until early/mid next week. No apology and not even interested about leaving people without medication. I complained on 24 March re Hillsbourough branch and still no response.

  6. Bob-glad things are a bit better for you. 25 years ago I was in a very similar place, it took me quite a while to get back to something like normal but ,once I did, it gave me a greater understanding of me, what I wanted and what I didn’t which has stood me in good stead since. Whilst Mental Health Services aren’t as good as they should be try them-sometimes you can’t see the benefit until you’re on the up. Main thing is don’t beat yourself up if you  have a dip-I can tell by your posts you’re determined to get through this

All local authorities were told a few weeks ago to do whatever they can to get the homeless inside, empty hotels were suggested. The government only put a few million £ into this scheme specifically, but referred to an extra £1.6bn in funding for councils to respond to coronavirus pressures.

There's still plenty of homeless (or beggars) about in Sheffield not sure why this is. Empty hotels and apartments should be plentiful, money perhaps an issue but if other places have enough why not us, perhaps some of the homeless are refusing the help.

In my experience longer term homeless  people often refuse accommodation offered as the accompanying conditions don’t accommodate their lifestyles  e.g. curfews, visitors, substance misuse. I’ve worked with a lot of individuals who have been supported to access numerous accommodation options but are unable to adhere to the requisite behaviours and are consequently barred. Unsurprisingly many of these people feel unable to engage with housing or other services and as street support with housing and underlying issues is severely under resourced there will always be a homelessness issue. The latest advice is not to provide money/food/drink to individuals in the hope they will be forced to access agencies such as the Archer Project. Such projects do excellent work but, for protection of service users and staff, have acceptable behaviour policies which some people cannot adhere to and end up being barred. The complex needs and experiences of some homeless people will never be solved by just putting a roof over their heads

I can tell you what my friend received:

    2 X 1l UHT milk

    1 family pack of Wheetos

    1x40 pack PG Tips

    Approx 2 kg potatoes

    Approx 1.5kg apples

    Approx 1kg onions

    2 tins of chopped tomatoes

    4 tins tomato soup

    2 tins of peas

    1 can tuna

    1 tin of corned beef

    1 can peaches

    500g spaghetti

    500g rice

    1 packet fig rolls

    1 tin of baked beans

    1 long life loaf

    1 jar pasta bake sauce

    2 toilet rolls

This is more or less what I received with a few variations. It’s been more than adequate and very gratefully received. I’m missing fresh veg but trying to make up for it with the apples and tangerines provided

Try your local co-op. Friend of mine was the only one in yesterday evening. Avoid the big stores if you can.

No local co-op but anyway  I’m on house arrest or shielding as they are now calling it. It’s like solitary confinement without a Mr McKay to bring your food

Went on the Sainsburys web site today and got a delivery slot for this Sunday so they must have got the info from the government and acted upon it. Great stuff.

Still waiting for my authorisation- does the minimum spend still apply and what is the delivery charge?

I requested a Boots delivery of a prescription and, despite my extremely vulnerable letter saying government is helping pharmacies to deliver free, I was told I would be charged £5 for the service

    Second that.

What we really need now, is common sense, clear -thinking, positivity,......and improved, increased Health care(permanent, not just temporary), might help?

Given that the government is having to spend to support business, jobs and incomes I think we’re in for austerity again when things improve. Whilst I’m not against the above I think some organisations are trying it on-radio report and interview this morning from rugby rep saying without gov support the sport would be lost forever

  12. I can only agree with the above. A 90+ neighbour has been housebound for years and says she has had enough. Her 70+ son and daughter in law are her sole carers  and visit several times a week and are continuing to do so despite being in the group advised to self isolate as they feel they have no choice

  13. Really confused by supermarkets dedicating specific times for elderly/vulnerable to shop. I appreciate they’ve trying to facilitate supplies to this group whilst on line shopping is so over subscribed but isn’t this at odds with government advice to self isolate. Also the time slots are at a time when public transport will be at its busiest getting people to work further increasing risk.

  14. I don’t think the government thought this through when they advised avoiding public places (as are supermarkets) resulting in people who would normally shop in store opting for home delivery and advising those self isolating to use home delivery if they have no support. Thankfully my son is willing to venture in store as I, currently following advice to self isolate as I have chronic lung disease, can’t get my normal home delivery

  15. Going through puberty is tough and confusing. Now aged over 60 I remember my own confused emotions, attempts to fit in to what was expected by parents/adults and conflicting demands of peers. I’ve witnessed this in my own children and now seeing it with grandchildren. I’ve always thought puberty wasn’t the right time to assess educational ability (there’s too much else going on) and have now widened my opinion to believe, whilst acknowledging the depth of emotion etc, that life changing decisions made at this time are sometimes misguided.

  16. I’m not making excuses for anyone but  it seems that individuals’ concerns were disbelieved or buried within the organisation they worked for. Multiple agencies/individuals were involved with  the victims but there seems to have been a lack of communication between them

We have to keep in mind that the killing of gut bacteria is only temporary- think antibiotics for example.

Good bacteria comes back. A good way to promote this is live bio yogert. Taken with a small amount of raw onion will enhance this.

Sounds like, with the addition of a bit of cucumber and a touch of garlic, a decent dip
