  1. South Yorkshire mayor has been in talks with government Friday and over the weekend. On Friday’s Question Time Dan Jarvis gave no indication on how the region would respond to the application of tier 3. ie follow Manchester or Liverpool. Either way it looks as though many of the major cities in the North will face the severe economic  consequences of the tier system. So much for Boris promise of levelling up

The government has been clear for months that school and university education would get the highest priority for being open, and that other sectors would have to shut down to compensate for the infections this would cause.

I suppose this is why they are known as the snowflake generation!

Not true if used correctly. You should never touch the mask. Only touch the attachments used to secure it.

Bit of reality, my youngest son who lives in Nottingham (potential tier 3) came to Sheffield (potential tier 3)  came to visit today. He met his brother outside for half an hour and  then came to see me in my garden. It felt really odd because I don’t know when I’ll see him or the two of  them together again. I’m in a support bubble with my eldest son so can have indoor meetings but, as he only has weekend contact with my only grandchild, I can only see her outside-time limited at this time of year. Contact has been problematic with Family Court exacting an order several years ago. Covid 19  is being used as an excuse to terminate contact despite regulations but access to legal support and Family Courts are also affected by Covid. I feel my small but very close family is being torn apart by the pandemic

We live on a on way in and out rd went out tonight for hospital appointment an ambulance had stopped dead in middle of rd with hazards on he had options to park on left on kerb or right in carpark but no he blocked road 2 hours I sat waiting to get passed missed appointment aswell road was chaos cars wanting up and down just a joke ambulance service

If you’re so upset ring the service management, you might be surprised to learn that emergency treatment is not dependent on the inconvenience caused to others. Presumably your ability to drive or wait 2 hours did not qualify you for life saving action so why not contact the clinic to inform them of the delay, request transportation, walk or sensibly rearrange appointment. Sometimes we have to accept that our needs are secondary to others

Isn't the government planning on employing thousands of 'Marshalls' to police it? Who knows what powers they may have been given, even permission to enter people's homes.

After 7 months shielding (give or take a few weeks of freedom) an extra visitor would be quite welcome 😷

I find this worrying from the BBC article posted by apelike, given the numerous **** ups on testing in this country - and as I said earlier - we don't know if someone who has had corvid is immune and for how long

"The declaration recommends a number of measures to protect the vulnerable, including regular testing of care-home workers, with a move as far as possible towards using staff who have acquired immunity."

You’ve hit the nail on the head, without a sufficient and efficient test, track and trace system supported by top notch IT systems and data analysis no measures will be fully effective. Not helped by factory new robotics causing , amongst other diagnostics, shortage of Covid testing swabs.

  6. We have all seen how Trump regularly sacks those who ‘upset’ him but being so reckless in his super spreading seems a bit extreme even for him. No doubt the   Super Man president who didn’t let the virus control him will label those less fortunate ‘losers’

Seems like a not very well thought through argument for "herd immunity" at a time when we don't even know  if someone who has had the virus is immune and if so for how long.

And it's a relative handful of scientists apparently linked to Trumps favoured covid advisor, Scott Atlas.

    https://www.wired.co.uk/article/great-barrington-declaration-herd-immunity-scientific-divide

"On Twitter, the economist and statistician Tim Harford noted the “scientists divided” theme featured prominently in the campaigns of tobacco firms keen to delay action on smoking-related disease and climate change deniers. We should be careful about how we interpret any so-called divide when it comes to Covid-19. And when we’re weighing up whether one approach is better than another, we should be extremely clear about what is science, what is supposition and what is just surface."

    https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-barrington-declaration-an-open-letter-arguing-against-lockdown-policies-and-for-focused-protection/

I watched a tv item today with scientist contributors from both camps, both from British universities, and both with persuasive arguments so I am a fence sitter. I’m also one of the ‘vulnerable’ who, after a brief sojourn into the new normal, has returned to self isolating with rates rising,  a situation which neither solution will solve

  8. The last recession seemed to be felt most keenly by the north of the country, possibly exacerbating the effects of the loss of traditional industries during Mrs Thatcher’s reign and not adequately addressed by Tony Blair’s government. I wonder if all the Tory MPs elected last time by disillusioned northerners will fight their corner in Boris’ government

Looks like a lot of health professionals including scientists are not happy about lockdowns either.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54442386

The Barrington declaration signed by many scientists and apparently gaining wider support advocates a return to normal activity for the majority whilst ‘protecting and supporting’ the most vulnerable. They claim the imposition of restrictions only suppresses infection which rises quickly when they are relaxed. They also claim any additional resulting deaths would be negated by lives saved by a fully functioning NHS ,a recovering economy and improving mental health

    What is Cummings excellent at?

Being the puppet master, pulling Boris’ strings and providing the soundtrack with overlaying buffoonary. Is he working undercover for Spitting Image?

    That's right Taxman.....

I don't believe a word of it tho,it's just a ploy to divert the spotlight away from not paying his taxes...

Regarding dodging the draft, it's disgusting he as the audacity to have said in the past that anyone who joins the military are stupid just goes to show what those who are wealthy really think of those who fight their endless money pit wars.....

I’m no Trump or Boris fan but they are individuals who, despite their office, have contracted the same virus that most of us are trying to avoid

south yorkshire social housing has suddenly started reviewing/auditing it's stock using various excuses to come into houses, count rooms, taking photographs etc

suspect this is related to an expected increase in homelessness soon as the banks move in on defaults

    anybody else had experiences ?

Social landlords’ tenancy agreements usually only allow entry by invitation or pre determined H&S conditions. Social landlords periodically carry out stock condition surveys to inform improvement programmes but tenants are pre contacted and fully informed as to the purpose. Local councils have a duty under Homeless legislation to provide advice and information to all persons presenting as homeless and to provide temporary accommodation to those meeting specific criteria whilst their case is being investigated. Sheffield Council has both their own en block and sub contracted Housing Association temporary accommodation so it doesn’t seem feasible they would be reviewing individual properties for this purpose. When you say SY social housing are you referring to SCC or Housing Associations? Any tenant should have an agreed appointment and entitlement to a full explanation for the purpose of any visit and can refuse access and make a complaint if they feel their landlord is making “an excuse “ to gain access. I think you might be barking up the wrong tree here

No disrespect to anyone intended but how do some people get so many scams? I get the odd one obviously but it looks like some people are inundated! 😲

I’ve  been more or less shielding for the last seven months so have had to do far more internet shopping than I ever did which is why I think I’m getting more scam emails/calls. There’s always someone out there willing to take advantage

  14. Ms Ferrier notified the Commons of her positive test quite quickly but wasn’t so forthcoming about her travel timeline so it took a couple of days for the truth to come out giving  unsuspecting possible contacts the opportunity to spread the virus even further. If she had any sense of public duty as an MP her apology would have been followed by her resignation. Good to hear on Radio 4 several of those who elected her disgusted with her actions and calling for her to resign. Presumably she’ll still be paid her salary/expenses whilst her potential contacts will have to wait for their monetary isolation claim to be awarded

So SCC has ended up spending £3 million securing the 20 year agreement with John Lewis, according to The Star in a FOI request.  Like Prince Al above, I'd say it's money well spent as well.

Especially if the other parts of the project stated in the piece come together?

I'd especially think the city centre could do with a few more independent stores, especially those run by local entrepreneurs.

I agree but, sadly a lot of these businesses are either going out of business or reluctant to invest in new ventures given the unpredictability of the pandemic and resulting restrictions.

  16. Been bombarded by emails (about 15 in last 24 hours) supposedly from Amazon in USA saying I’d won an I phone and just needed to pay £4 postage. I expect I’d have to give card details for postage payment and then have my account ransacked

  17. Jeremy Corbin breaking the rule of six at a dinner party, Boris’ dad not wearing a mask in a shop and now an SNP member travelling from Scotland to London with Covid symptoms and, after a positive test, doing the return journey. Yet they wonder why ordinary Joe is not following regulations. A case of one rule for them........ or have they all got Cummingitis

Wouldn't it have been a good idea to have all these different bodies working together to find a solution?

I think that would have been a logistical nightmare and, as I understand it, they were working on different vaccination modules/formulations with the hope that at least one would find the answer. The more successful trials the better re the amounts available and competitive costs so not just the rich countries have access

    Can't fault your fair mindedness.

    Sort of good news from.Scotland.

Of the increasing numbers of positive tests ,43 percent are teenagers who are in the least likely to be seriously sickened by the virus.

Problem is they are often asymptotic so unwittingly spread it to others some of whom are more vulnerable. I was saddened to see the televised scenes of young people socialising with all and sundry on West Street pre curfew. Post curfew a friend went for a meal on West Street and was thankful she had pre booked a taxi for 10 pm as, in her words, the area was swarming with people with supermarkets and off-licences struggling to cope with the numbers desperate to buy alcohol

  20. My ex lives in Nottingham, aged 63  but no underlying health conditions, contacted his GP and told all appointments allocated. Contacted various pharmacies to be told all out of stock of flu vaccine. He managed to get on the Oct/Nov waiting list at a supermarket pharmacy

  21. There’s obviously some issues to be investigated e.g. how the gun wasn’t found on the arrest search, how it was fired at the PO and himself when he was handcuffed behind. No doubt this will all be revealed but thank goodness we are not USA and take to the streets, protest and are fired up to take retaliatory action but instead can feel the sadness of a person killed whilst doing their job
