  1. Looking to invest in the right business / Dont think they can be much clearer than that. / If you cant understand that maybe you shouldnt be giving advice :hihi::hihi::hihi:

I think this is a little unfair. For example, my own company is seeking £1M of investment (and we are getting close to completing it...fingers, toes and everything else crossed ;-)); is this the level of investment the OP is talking about?

Plus, for example, some investors will not want to invest in businesses involved in manufacturing munitions for war (we're not BTW!).

I think it is quite reasonable to understand more about the OP's interests so we can answer the questions considerately.

  3. Unless you're expecting big profits, it may not be worth all the bother to go Limited. Maybe a sole trader would be better for you? If so, you'd definitely want a distinct bank account, just for business activity, makes it much easier to do accounts when your business transactions are not all mixed up with your personal ones.

    Best of luck with it.

Waldo, not necessarily :). With a limited liability company, the company's liability is limited (normally £1K), sorry for stating the bleeding obvious but what I mean is, if things go wrong for the OP (and as long as he has kept within the law), then creditors can only pursue him for assets in the business (assuming the OP hasn't agreed to assign any personal assets as security)...plus the £1K. This way he protects creditors pursuing other assets (such as the home).

The downside is the need to keep accounts (which isn't a bad practice anyway) and record them at Companies House.

  4. Rolling pins are all pretty similar????? Have you seen the huge variety of patterns that can be created on patterned pins. It's phenominal and children will be mesmerised by it in my opinion.

And here lies one of your challenges. The average person would not know this so wouldn't think of coming to your museum...you will need a sizeable marketing budget to promote the idea.

However the idea of having a fun place for parents to go baking with their kids could well have appeal, but the last thing I would do is call it a museum ("c'mon kids we're off to a museum" vs "c'mon kids, we're off to that fun place to make pies and stuff").

  5. Thank you Blackbeard. I am working up business plan. I am not looking to make huge amounts. As long as I can provide myself with a living and more importantly provide much needed amenities to families, in terms of fun educational days out.

Do you know named contacts at the two places you mention that you could help link up with?

I will ignore the other two sniggering responses.

Please don't be too hard, initially I did laugh myself but if you are serious about this, I suggest you spend a lot of time researching this. Most museums do not charge (and there are plenty of them to choose from). Plus would kids really want to go to a rolling pin museum (and I'm struggling to think how they have changed over the years!)

Your start up costs will be fairly high (irrespective of what you display in your museum), so breaking even will be a challenge.

If this is a joke, nice one :) If it isn't, please think it through thoroughly!

  6. I have in the past made a couple of noses and an ear as part of my training, but that was using the old lost wax technique and packing a silicone type material.

This is still the way they are made, however we have come up with a method for 3D Printing soft tissue prostheses

The really interesting and technically difficult things are eyes and the surrounding soft tissue.

We've also come up with a solution for 3D Printing Ocular Prostheses as well. It would be useful to know more about the issues to do with the surrounding soft tissue.

This might be of interest to readers. Innovate UK have finally got rid of the ridiculous themes to be eligible for an Innovation Voucher. Now, as long as you are a business with an idea, you can apply for an IV for £5K. The caveats are:

    1. You can only work with a supplier you have not used before (which is bonkers but they are worried about fraud)

    2. This excludes VAT, so if you are not VAT registered, you have to pick up the £1000 VAT (£5K plus 20% VAT)

    3. you have to pay the supplier in full before claiming back the value of your Innovation Voucher

You can find out more at https://vouchers.innovateuk.org/ It is a lottery, but if you fail with your first application, just keep reapplying!

A bit of advice? Avoid Universities as you will get very little for £5K from them (and they will take an age before they doing anything useful to boot!)

    Vouchers are no longer available.

  8. He needs an address that can be registered to the business.

For what purpose is the address being registered? For company registration or for vendors to invoice to?

For company registration (with companies house), it does not really matter. However for invoicing purposes, it could affect your landlords credit rating, in the future, if your friend defaults.

I'm surprised that your Landlord is allowing this; have you checked the terms of the lease you signed? He could be using this as a way to get you out of his property!!!

  9. My daughter says she has been accepted for receipt of a government grant so she can go fully self employed. She expects the money in 2-3 weeks. She then says she needs a mentor to get further help then asks me if I can lend her £450. Before I talk to her I would appreciate knowing if such a grant is available and what is a mentor? Any info please. On here or txt 07799726858 and I'll ring you back.

To answer your question. A mentor is someone who provides support to someone. A mentor's role is primarily to give guidance, support and to make sure the individual being mentored does what they say they will do i.e. to hold them to account (in a positive way :))

It is different to consultancy. Consultancy is where you pay someone for specific advice and expertise.

I do not know of any Government sponsored scheme where you have yo pay for a mentor as a condition of getting a grant. The mentor is normally provided as part of the grant.

  10. What Cyclone says is sort of correct. If you won't agree to the change in your contract, they can impose it on you by terminating your current contract and then re-engaging you on a new contract. They would need to terminate your old contract in line with the terms of that contract.

You could then claim unfair dismissal (if you have more than 2 years service) and show why you cannot work the new contract (for instance if there are childcare issues you could claim indirect sex discrimination), although this should also form part of your consultation. It is quite complex, though.

If there are more than 20 employees who reject the changes, the rules are slightly different.

There is a good leaflet from ACAS here:

    http://www.acas.org.uk/media/pdf/q/k/Varying-a-contract-of-employment-Acas-leaflet.pdf

This chap is an expert in employment issues (it is his day job!)...I was wondering if the OP was a junior doctor by any chance???

  11. I don't think there is anything you can do. There is no contract and they contact you 'ad hoc' for work. My advice would be to find another security firm to work for.

I'd also suggest you get an employment contract, even if 'zero hours' (which in my day were known as 'part time' contracts).

    Good luck with finding work.

  12. What sort of name or phrase would you put into a search engine if you were looking for a specialist or tropical plant nursery?

I ask as I know someone starting a nursery and they want to use a name which I think will be detrimental. They think horticulture has a bad image so want to be different and think a different name will help.

They are very well qualified both on an experience and theoretical level having just finished uni and exhibited at Chelsea. The name they are thinking of calling their business is Incendium They don't want to add anything about plants, unusual, specialist nursery or mention tropical.

    Comments please.

Cheryl, Google provide a tool for this very purpose (not surprisingly!) https://adwords.google.co.uk/KeywordPlanner

  13. We have already changed our Steve. I had hoped we wouldn't get any more calls or emails but we did yesterday. A lady gave me quite a detailed account about how a driver kept driving on her bumper trying to push her to go faster then pulled up along side her on the wrong side of the road in a narrow lane where there was barely room for two cars. She went on to discuss more and gave a registration number. She said she would give me a chance to discuss before going to the Police. I asked her to call the company then let me know how they reacted to her. I said I was fed up with complaints about this company so I was happy to give her a link to their website.

There isn't much I can do really. I hope she complains to the Police about their driver.

Here's your chance to use social media...assuming they are on Twitter why not send them a tweet 'pls train your drivers to drive safely. We're fed up with taking calls about your company'...that should get a reaction (and I'd retweet for sure!).

  14. I suggest that you don't answer that on a public forum, Chez2 ;)

    Cheryl,

Listen to Stefan's advice (L00b). He is a very good patent attorney here in Sheffield.

Your challenge will be who created their logo first (i.e. who had 'prior art'). It may well be that they were using their logo before you created yours. If that is the case, you might have to consider changing your own. This is a classic scenario why companies register their trademarks (as any 'prior art' is likely to be found in searches).

I hope it works out for you :)

  15. Hi

I am in the process of taking out a lease on a commercial property for my business. The landlord is putting together the lease so I need someone to check through it and communicate with the other solicitors. I have been quoted £750 by one firm. I wonder if this abput right (could do with it not costing so much but will pay what I have to to be safe). Can anyone recommend anyone in this field who is reliable and effective?

    Thanks

Not sure if this is good value or not. However I'd focus more on the reputation of the solicitor, rather than their costs. Signing a lease is a big financial commitment that you do not want to get wrong.

The very best of luck with your business.
