The Wicker Arches and the bridge would have regained their importance, having been ignored by Sheffielders for so long.

After all bridge was built by the most important Civil Engineer of the 19th Century although and he was Sheffield born.

The Wicker arches are Irrelevant. !  I was specifically on about the Bridge WEST of the Victora and the surrounding stone work.

They have to remain in place.  Surely?

Very little of Victoria Station remain- a single line and some foundations.

The Royal Victoria Hotel has encroached on the site of the station buildings.

The new HS2 would stretch towards Nunnery requiring the redevelopment of the whole are.

Personally my opinion was for the Meadowhall option, however I fully understand why SCC should see an opportunity to regenerate this area.

Hmm...What about the Stone bridge?  And all the surrounding Original Stone work that is still visible today?

It depends where the join is. If it is a couple of feet off the ground then you just have to take the drain cover off and pull the pipe down to separate the joint. If it’s 30 feet in the air, it’s a bit more tricky.

Just a thought. Plastic drainpipes don’t usually spontaneously spring a leak. They usually start to come apart at the joints because of wind, being hit by a football, someone pulling on it etc. It may be worth checking that this isn’t the case before going any further.

That's not Entirely true...Plastic is a fantastic conductor for Electric.

You might not think so... but it is.!

Lightening can damage Plastic Drain Pipes.!

OP...It's a simple fix and should cost no more than a call out charge of £10-15.00.

The exact reason why SCC lobbied for the Victoria route as they saw it as an excellent opportunity to genererate growth in that part of the City.

The area would have been rejuvinated by a new station and associated infrastructure and business.

The choice of Meadowhall was in my opinion the right one- sadly the Government changeg their minds without any local consultation.

Yes...Well I would agree to a certain extent that that part of the City would have been rejuvinated...That said...Where would everyone using the Train park?

There just isn't enough room there...Unless they build Multi-Story car parks which would blight the area.

I think Victoria Station should be left as it is...Let the old girl be.

Nope, they spent thousands trashing the idea, throwing their dummies out of the pram and generally DEMANDING that if hs2 was to come to the city it HAD to be in the city centre and nowhere else was acceptable.

The government said fair enough, sod you, have this heap of smelly dodo instead, and gave us the Midland option.  Which, blow me the scc STILL wernt satisfied with!!

Looking back on many of SCC's "ideas" they have spent hundreds of thousands in what seems to be a very successful project of turning an excellent progressive city into a failing rundown backwater that no one wants to come to

    Good comment...

It's such a shame for our once great city.  Flaming heck we built this city on STEEL.  Now we are losing that great heritage our fore farther's worked so hard for.

I don't know a great deal about HS2...But in my mind Meadowhall has to be the correct choice.

The last time i drove past Victoria Station.. it was Decrepit, Defunct and void of activity.!

No to mention where folks would park?

I used to get 3 together for about 3x£45 from a friend.

Hopefully more recommendations will come for you in time for mid August, but don't let it run out!!

It might help if you aim this reply at the right person.

Once upon a Time, any self respecting DIY guy, or Handyman, could tackle these sorts of jobs, however due to the Govt of recent times:

I guess it was due to some careless slipshod workers, who created dangerous practices, which ended in the then Govt taking actions, with more and more regulations, like you have to have a Gas Safe cert. To fit Gas, plus to do Electrical Work you have to have the up to date current Cert. For that, likewise you have to be a qualified Carpenter to do carpentry, or Joinery,  which all drives the Costs up. Etc etc..

Roofers once worked from Ladders, in my younger days, which made roofing jobs relatively cheap, nowadays they only Work on your roof once the Scaffolders have been, hiking costs then between £300-1000 more, dependant on what you get done?

It all makes money for the current workers to achieve more....methinks

I can feel your frustration. But Safety has to prevail.

I can re-wire a complete house...Not legally...Im bang Colour blind.! But I can do it.!

I can also fit Gas central heating,  fix broken Boilers,  I can do roofing, fix gutters, joinery, masonry work, re-pointing, brick laying...Fit a whole new kitchen or bathroom and Tile them too......  Non of which I am Legally allowed to do.!

Apart from in / or on my own properties.!

These days you have to have a Certificate for just about everything.!

Which is not in the interest of the workers. It's more peace of mind for the folks paying for that service.

Which I think is fair enough.

Someone once said..."It's not what you know...It's WHO you know"...

As a side note it is possible on some removable storage to 'tell the drive' it's something else, for example take a 4GB memory stick and tell it that it's a 64GB.

It won't be and can't hold more than it's original size, but windows will report it as a 64GB card.  It used to be a common scam on eBay to sell small cheap memory sticks as more expensive larger ones.

    Ahh...thanks for that.

  9. Back in the early 2000's I was a delivery driver. I covered mostly the north east and west.

Manchester was part of my destinations.

One time, on the way back from Manchester...on the snake pass, i was travelling behind a Yellow saab for quite some time.

About 3/4 of the way back, towards Sheffield.. the Saab just vanished after a corner.!

There are NO turn offs or roads that it could have taken.!

I could see the road ahead for quit a distance. That car had Gone.!

I actually stopped and got out of my van to look over the edge to see if the car had gone over somewhere.

    Absolutely nothing.!

To this day, I still have no idea where that Saab went. !

  10. Thanks guys. Great replies.  Very informative and interesting stuff.

10 years or so ago you could get a 512MB Micro SD Card. Today you can get a whopping 512GB Micro SD Card.!

(Edited to add. Just found out there is a 1TB Micro SD Card)..!!

    Amazing.!

    Thanks again.

  11. Iv'e been trying to find the answer to this question for quite some time.

Searching on 'Google' just comes up with a whole mass of irrelevant stuff.

My question is this.  Is there a 'Physical' difference between say a 500GB Hard drive to a 1TB Hard drive? ( The same question is for all kinds of data storage like Memory cards, Micro SD, SD, etc etc.)

They look exactly the same and they weight exactly the same.!

So what's is it that makes them different?

Is it all down to 'What you tell the Drive it is, it is'... in the software?

    Thank you for that link.

Yes that's exactly what i'm after. I made a Typo in my reply above, The Exhaust pipe i need to join is only 28mm Diameter not 38mm.!

I can get the one's in your link from my local car spares shop but they are all way too big.

    Thanks again.

  13. How about this for a conundrum?

Imagine a Jubille Clip...But quite wide...say 3'In... with TWO screws instead of just one.

A bit like a small 3' pipe that can be clamped. 38mm Diameter.

No one in the whole WORLD makes or sells these things. !

(It's for joining one end of a Motorcycle Exhaust to the other...)

  14. In the 70's. I lived in High green..Quite high up.. during a storm... if you looked in the right direction (across towards Ecclesfield)..you could see some fantastic Lightning in the sky and hear massive thunderclaps that followed.

My mum told me that if it Thunders and Lightens... It means that 'Iv'e done something naughty'...!

Yeah me and me palls just scromped half a dozen Apples and a few pears from the local farm..

Hardly worthy of being struck down by Lightning, I  think..!

Good proper storms though..Not like the whimpy little effots we see today.!

Me neither - very grateful to them - they certainly drummed the lessons home - one was that you don't really learn to drive until you've passed your test.

Happy to say I passed first time and have done nigh on 500,000 accident free  miles since.

Good stuff...I actually failed My First Driving test..!. My Driving Instructor couldn't fathom why>?

My First test was at Milldlewood and lasted almost an hour..!

My Driving Instructor re-arranged the test for the next day at Manor top..

After 20 Minutes of Driving I passed..!

    Work that one out?

Same here - BSM taught - I think after Mirror/Signal/Manouevre you were taught to "make progress", ie get up to the speed limit.

I also had a very useful motorway lesson with BSM after I'd passed my test. First thing you learned - on the slip road get up to 70 because loads of the traffic you'll be joining will be doing that speed.

    Yes..And yes again..!

BSM were very good back then...I have no clue what they are like now.!
