  1. It does take a while to create a restore point so I've unchecked it too. My pc has a 2.3ghz CPU and it's still takes 20 seconds or so. I'd say it's pretty normal and nothing to worry about. Also, don't worry too much about restore points as one is created every time you boot up your PC so you should always have a recent one to fall back on (unless you never switch off your pc).

  2. If you've been happy with VW then the Skoda is a good choice. I have a Skoda Superb company car which is a 130 TDI. Made in Czech but lift the bonnet and everything is stamped "Made in Germany" anyway. The Fabia is based on the Polo so may be a bit small for you so look at the Octavia which is based on Golf. With a new Octavia out last month the second hand values of previous model should have dropped recently.

  3. True story.......

I've just come back from my hols. Drove down to central France, did a bit of touring round there. Went over to Eurodisney for a couple of days and toured the Champagne area. Caught the Dieppe - Newhaven ferry and arrived back in UK about 1.00pm today. Came back via M25, A1(M) etc.

Got within 4 miles of home and guess what. The Parkway is being dug up again and I got stuck in the traffic at around 8:00pm tonight. The first traffic jam in over 2300 miles and 2 weeks of driving. How many times do the council need to chop and change and resurface and re-barrier and reconstruct The Parkway. It seems to be like the Forth Bridge. Just when they seem to finish it, they start from scratch again.

  4. Hi

I used to live in Penistone which is about 3 or 4 miles from Thurgoland. If you like village life and being surrounded by countryside you should be fine. I don't know the council houses you mention but it is only a small village so it's unlikely to be a sprawling estate. I never saw any bad press about Thurgoland in the local newspaper (Barnsley Chron) in the ten years I lived nearby.

    To answer your questions...

What's it like - see above

Schools - Local primary is small and is good (see link). Local secondary will be Penistone Grammar which is one of the top schools in the Barnsley area. Check websites for school results

    http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/council/newslines/newsline1917.asp

Sheffield - About 10 miles away. Takes between 20 and 45 minutes by car, depending on time of day. Train station in Penistone but not good service to Sheffield. See previous post for bus info.

Jobs - Not much in Thurgoland village but nearby towns are Penistone and Stocksbridge and then there's Sheffield and Barnsley not too far away.

Location - About 10 miles from Sheffield and 5 miles from Barnsley. Rates are payable to Barnsley council.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

  5. After the recent thread about female singers here's another one for your input. Love songs are OK but wouldn't it be nice so see a CD released such as .....

Songs of Hate & Pain (or)

20 Songs to Rip Your Heart Apart (or)

The Best Hate Album in the World...Ever

With some songs you can feel the venom spilling out of the record. Here's a few to start with

Positivley 4th Street - Bob Dylan

You're So Vain - Carly Simon

How Do You Sleep - John Lennon

    One - U2

    Changes - Black Sabbath

    You've Got a Nerve - Rod Stewart

    Oh God - Annie Lennox

    Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday

Still Got The Blues - Gary Moore

Thorn In My Side - Eurythmics

Man Of The World - Fleetwood Mac

Love Of My Life - Queen

    Stop - Sam Brown

    Nothing Compares 2U -Sinead O'Connor

    Any track by Alanis Morrisette

  6. Relax.... Chill out ..... :)

Shouldn't be a problem for Sheffield as the water comes off the peaks into the resevoirs. More off an issue in places like London where it's said that drinking water passes through the human body up to 7 times by the time it reaches the sea. UUGGGGHHH.

  7. Hi

I've been a Beatles fan for as long as I care to remember. I found the Beatles Story a bit of a let down because there's very little "original" stuff on show but I'm an adult. I'm sure a kid would love it. The shop can be pricey but there's a better shop on Matthew St called the Beatles Shop.

Also try to get yourself on the "Magical Mystery Tour" around the old homes and haunts of Liverpool. The coach is a replica of the coach used in the film of the same name. It visits all the homes, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields etc.

Autoroute tells me that it's about 1 mile from Lime St station to the Pierhead so it's only a 20 minute walk. On the way though you can pass Matthew St and take a look at the site of The Cavern (now a shopping centre with a replica club underneath).

  8. I read your post just after reading this post

    http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15068

Two extremes of life in Sheffield.....

My life mirrors yours, great job, great family, good health and life gets better as I get older. Is everything preordained or do we get the life we deserve. Who knows ? Being an atheist I don't praise the lord but I do consider myself to be very lucky with the way my life has turned out so far :)

  9. The only info I know about it was from the book I read. You can find it at Broomhill Library in the local history section. It's written by a lady who worked at the hospital and is a history of the hospital and its patients. There's only a couple of paragraphs on the plane crash but here's some brief details....

The plane was a US Air Force jet.

I believe it run out of fuel.

It crashed into the hospital in about 1954/5 and started a fire in one building.

One, or maybe two, people were killed.

I think the pilot ejected and was unhurt (but Bob mentioned otherwise).

The story was well reported in the press.
