  1. We're off to live with the in-laws for 3 months shortly and have to put some things into storage. Doing a search on Google I've found a company called Apollo Storage on West Bar. Can anyone recommend this company or know of any others. What sort of prices do they charge etc. I'm after indoor storage rather than outside/container storage as I've loads of books & records that I don't wan't getting damp etc.

    Thanks in advance

  2. There's a report in this month's "Which" magazine (available in libraries) which exposes dodgy practices regarding estate agents. The agents were tested by "Which" people posing as buyers and sellers and amongst the scams were agents telling bidders that higher bids existed when they didn't and agents refusing to pass on bids to the vendor unless the bidder used the financial services recommended by the agent.

No Sheffield agent was mentioned and I'm not suggesting that such a practice would happen up here

Moral of the story. Talk to the vendors more. If you put a bid in, mention it to the vendor. If an agent says that higher bids have been accepted, ask for details and ask the vendor.

  3. Hello Dr.

I hope the following proves useful to you. At the moment we live in a place called Penistone, a lovely little town about 13 miles from Sheffield with reasonable priced housing. My daughter goes to Sheffield High school, a private school in S10 area of Sheffield. My wife commutes into Sheffield (about 35 minutes) but after a couple of years of this we have decided to move and will be shortly moving to S10 area to cut down on commuting. The school fees cost about £1500 per term (£4500 per year) but we consider it money well spent. If you're willing to commute just make sure that it's a journey that won't drive you mad and bear in mind that a long commute can be hard on the child (we have to leave at 07:20 every morning to beat the traffic etc).

If I can be of any more help, send me a private message and I'll tell you all about our buying experiences etc.

See also the "dodgy estate agents" link.

    Regards

  4. Muggins

I'm in the process of looking for a house at the moment. Looked at a few but not seen one yet to put an offer in. Looking to buy in S10 (Lodge Moor etc). Are the horror stories true about the bidding wars ? Our house is sold (STC).

Any hints, tips and advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards

  5. We're moving from Penistone (and it's a wrench for me but it's what the wife wants). Your £120k will buy you more out here than the centre of Sheffield. It's about 13 miles away, 40 minutes commute and has a lovely rural village feel to it including small library, weekly livestocj market,a dozen shops and best of all, a small cinema.

also put ads in local shops, handed leaflets to parents at my daughters school and this week put an ad in the Gazette.

However, I've had no replies at all even though I have sold my own house so there is no chain etc.

Is anyone buying at the moment and are things cooling down ?

Is anyone thinking of selling in S10 (Lodge moor, Fulwood area) ?

    Not quite desperate..........yet.

Where are you wnting to move to if you sell?

I've got my house up for exchange in the ad's part of the forum!

We've sold in Penistone and want to buy in the Lodge Moor, Fulwood area to be nearer the school. Funnily enough, we'll end up living near Crystal Peaks when we have to move in with the in-laws at the end of June. Only for a short while (I hope).....

  8. We are looking to move into the S10 (lodge Moor), S6 (upper Stannington) or S33 (upper Bamford) area from our lovely town of Penistone (only 13 miles away but too much of a commute for the school and work run). I have a deep mistrust of estate agents and having just sold my house privately I now want to buy privately. Has anyone any experience of buying without the use of an estate agent. Are there any good websites that private sellers use or has anyone tried private adverts in local newspapers etc. Or has anyone got a 3/4 detached for sale ?????

    Regards
