I lived in Woodhouse Rd, Intake in the early 50's. There must have been a Gowers somewhere near the junction with Mansfield Rd as one of my mum's favorite stories concerned my sister creating chaos by pulling out one of the lower tins from a pyramid of tins.

Thanks to all who have replied. I didn't know there had been a colliery there. Interesting how views on Sreetview differ from my memory, but they would as the site has been levelled! Pete

When I was a kid in the 1950s I lived in Woodhouse Rd and used to play on an area of waste ground between Prince of Wales Road and Kilvington Crescent. Looking at Google maps it must have been in the general area where Queen Mary Road and Fitzherbert Rd are now. My now very vague memories are of a tip/slag heap possibly with a water filled pit/lagoon. Can anyone tell me what was in this area pre 1950s please? Thanks Peted

Hi Hillsbro Thanks for the scan - sounds like my mothers friend Winny could have taken the shop at 148 over from Mr Harper. We lived at the back of 146 but I was very young and have no memory of the house before the birth of my sister late in 1950. We must have moved to Intake about 1952 I guess. -
Toys ,games and goodies from the ghost of Christmas past.

The first Christmas toys I remember getting were two farm sets of tinplate tractor and trailer with wheeled hay rake. It was Christmas 1950 and we had loads of visitors who all called to see my new baby sister born on 21 Dec. I've always imagined there might still have been a shortage of toys post war so the limited selection meant I ended up with two of the same set! In later years I had a walkie talkie set which might have been the Dan Dare ones mentioned above. It consisted of two purple coloured plastic handsets joined by a thin strong twine. If you pulled the twine tight and spoke the words could be heard at the other end. There was a loud whistle at the bottom of the handset to attract the attention of your friend at the other end! One year I got a huge Meccano set in a ply-wood box made by my dad. It was obviously second hand, incorporating some pre-war a parts for making aeroplane models, but I loved it and played with it for years. Wish we'd kept it! -
Esso's 'I've got a Tigeer in my tank' catchy tune I seem to remember

1st TV programme you can remember?

Wasn't Bernard Braden (#42 above) married to Barbara Kelly? My mum and dad, and hence me, used to watch her along with Eamonn Andrews, Gilbert Harding, Isobel Barnet and David Niven and others on What's My Line. -
Had the following today from Sheffield Local Studies "Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any references to the Sheffield fireboat. The image on Picture Sheffield came with very little information. It was donated to us in 1992. I have looked in the Centenary History of Sheffield fire Brigade, published in 1969, but there is no mention of a fireboat in the section on world war 2. I'm sorry but I can't find any other references to it in our collections....."

Perhaps they weren't good sailors!!!

Since 'Alpha' appears to be relatively unknown she may have been lost during WW2. I will try and follow this up sometime and report back if I find anything. Pete
