Ref Enzer's f &chip shop N.Botham St...this is where the late great Johnny Butler used to start /finish the Grimesthorpe Feast Walk,at the forefront of Chippy up the steps,if I remember the month of May to clash with Whitweek ? A fantastic highlight for Grimesthorpe. Albert Parr, no doubt used to win every year --by one means or another. I being a pal of all the family -mainly Roy, used to help out, at the finish, John (Snr) used to throw sweets etc, to all in Botham St. I believe this festival was functioned by His contributions and from local Pubs/Shops etc. nb my memory of this Great District I will never forget.

  3. Agreed bantycock - east end, especially Grimesthorpe , good & friendly districts from yesteryears, education in itself.

  5. The Cannon Hall stood behind where the pub used to be, in my days, on visiting the ruins, we called it haunted house
  6. Stpetre, yes Hammonds chop sauce, also as I have just stated-yes to a Beehive sauce...sometimes known as 'Beetop'

  9. Hi rf2690, watched this thread for quite a time now, contribute few points. I'm one of the Wright's who lived below you on Moss Street, just below Oldfield's dairy. Assuming I'm talking about your right family?, your mum , Kath used to regularly visit my mum Nellie (Ellen), also in those days knew your dad well,-Spike. If I'm talking about right, your sister Mary being the same age as me.
  10. hi Peter R, there must have been a bookies,either legal /illegal in 1961 in Grimesthorpe-as I asked mum to put me a bet on 'National race'-I went to play football in a match-the horse won-but the bet didn't get on !-won at 66-1 ? Also I believe that a Mr. Fidler was parson at Grimesthorpe Chapel discussed earlier,could be wrong, electrical were stocked there many moons ago.....I lived in the area circa 1953-1968
  11. Hiya Fleetwood -enjoyed your happy days & memories to days of yesteryear -I was at the time great friends of Roy Butler,youngest of the family I knew so well,as you described from Cyclops Street re-pigeon cotes, afternoons out etc., I lived below at Moss Street -as I said earlier,Happy Days

  13. Tonio, Butlers fish &chip shop was opposite Wellington public -at that time I lived up Moss St near Oldfields dairy, chips&cake lovely -in my days could n't afford the fish !....Johnny Butler, their son eventually took a F & C shop many years later at Batemoor -Sheff 8

To Alarmingmark, Iworked at Steads 1961-69,must confess,happiest days of my life, you mention your dad being a wire drawer until early 80's, when did he start at Steads, or did he work at Darwins Bright Steels,known for their wire drawing,across the road,but still part of industry in the Darwins Group.

  18. Brian1941..talking about Cyclops Street,used to knock about with Roy Butler of no.13,knew his bros well John,Francis & sister Shirley,John dad &Clara or Claire his mum.-playing football as lads with e.g.Ken Taylor,Kenny Gray,Mick Martin etc.

Re-Michael Rhodes(age 72),brother of Doreen,Les &late Terence,am I thinking of same Rhodes family,if so, further condolences of recent to the family.
  20. Hi Pigeon, sorry about belated response, have had a 'trying' day, used to live in same yard as Claypoles, they were at bottom,we right at top,will confirm dates later.

  22. Yes Pigeon I know that area quite well, came from Moss Street
  23. Harry Whattam's yard including pigs was 3/4 way down Hunsley St on left hand side, across from Sutcliffe's shop
