  1. Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing to local people to help them paint Sheffield yellow with daffodils as part of the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this Spring. Our charity aim, to increase the money we raise to ensure we are able to deliver the right care, in the right place, at the right time, still stands. At the moment we are absolutely desperate for volunteers to offer their help at collections in Sheffield as part of our Great Daffodil Appeal 2011 during February and March. Money raised at these collections will help fund the local nursing service and you will be making a real difference to terminally ill people in your own community. We have collection dates booked at a number of venues in Sheffield and would really appreciate help from local people in making sure we raise as much money as possible from these. You’ll be surprised by how much you can raise in just a couple of hours! Every daffodil badge exchanged for a donation will help us to provide more nursing care to people terminally ill at home. f you think you are able to give just two hours to help collect at a venue near you in the coming weeks then please feel free to contact me on either [email protected] or on 0114 279 3010 to let me know which collection you’d like to sign up for so we can get you booked in asap. I look forward to hearing from you soon! 2. Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing to local people to help them paint Sheffield yellow with daffodils as part of the charity’s annual Great Daffodil Appeal this Spring. Every year The Great Daffodil Appeal raises much-needed funds to help our Marie Curie Nurses care for terminally ill people and their families. Each appeal the charity holds collections at supermarkets across Sheffield, which can help raise thousands for local cancer care. This year local fundraisers in South Yorkshire alone are hoping to raise more than £45,000 from The Great Daffodil Appeal – which will provide the equivalent of a staggering 2,250 hours of Marie Curie Nursing Care. Across this region the charity needs to recruit 300 new volunteers to man street collections during February and March to help raise money so that it can continue providing these vital services locally. To make sure this year’s appeal is the biggest and best yet local fundraisers are also appealing for local people to sign up to take on the role of Collection Organisers for collections in their local community. Local fundraiser Liz Howlett explains, “We’ve got about 100 collections happening in our area during February and March but to get all these collection set up, recruit enough volunteers to staff them all and then get them there on the day takes some organisation - and that’s where we need your help! What we’re looking for are local people who think they could help us organise a collection rota for a supermarket near them; booking in volunteer collectors, briefing volunteers, distributing daffodils and collection boxes to them and then counting up and banking the money afterwards. We’d meet up with you beforehand to tell you how it all works and obviously you’ll receive a full kit to help you with your new role. You’ll be amazed at how much you can help us raise by helping to organise a collection in your neighbourhood – it doesn’t take much time and plus it’s a great way to get family, friends and neighbours involved!” Anyone wanting to join the Daffodil Team in Sheffield, as a Collection Organiser or as a Volunteer Collector, should contact Liz at the local office on 0114 279 3010.
  3. Hi Sarah, Thanks ever so much for getting back to me on this - it's absolutely fantastic that you've decided to get in touch to offer your help in making up on some of the donations we missed out on in December as a result of the hideous weather. Sorry for the delay in replying but it is absolutely not too late for you to get involved and help raise money in support of our local Marie Curie Nurses. There are a few really easy ways that you can fundraise, and we'd support you fully with all of these from our local office here - how about organising a work place collection? Or roping in a couple of colleagues to help arrange a work coffee morning or dress down day? If you'd prefer to organise an event of your own for friends, family and neighbours to enjoy what about hosting a cake and coffee morning at home, or putting on a pub quiz, bingo or talent night at your local, or sorting out a sponsored walk in a local park, or what about a small sporting event such as a five a side football tournament? We've even had people do ice skating events and go karting competitions before! On our website there is a downloadable fundraising kit (found in the Fundraising and Volunteering tab on the site - sorry Sheffield Forum won't allow me to post the link here) and there are loads more ideas in this for events that you can put on yourself, whether you decide to fundraise at home or at work. As I said I'll be on hand to help with it all from here in the local office - as I said on the original post every penny really does help so big or small your support is massively appreciated. Thanks so much again for getting in touch Sarah and feel free to give me a call at anytime on 0114 279 3010 to have a chat about your fundraising ideas or email to [email protected] And I'll check back in on this thread soon to catch up with you on any plans! Liz
  4. Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing to local people to help them raise funds in support of the local Marie Curie Nursing Service after bad weather hit their 2010 Christmas Collection Appeal and had a devastating impact on their festive fundraising. Every November and December the charity run their Christmas Collection Appeal, raising vital funds at collections across South Yorkshire when volunteers give up their time to collect festive donations from shoppers. This year the South Yorkshire Fundraising Office were hoping to raise over £10,000 in support of the local Marie Curie Nurses but the recent bad weather has meant these hopes have suffered a serious set back. The serious snow fall earlier this month meant collections had to be cancelled as understandably volunteers were unable to travel to where they needed to be and in general shops were much quieter than usual. Local fundraiser Liz Howlett anticipates that the charity has missed out on approximately £3,500 of donations when the busiest collection weekend of the festive season was so severely disrupted by the adverse weather conditions. In order to try and make up some of this loss fundraisers are appealing to local people to try and come up with some of their own fundraising ideas to help raise money and show support for the local Marie Curie Nurses during December and into the New Year. Liz explains, “The bad weather has really hit our appeal very hard this year but Marie Curie Cancer Care's patients can’t be put on hold and now more than ever we need your support to ensure we are able to continue to provide high quality nursing care to patients in their own homes. There are so many fun and simple events that you, your friends, family and work colleagues can organise to fundraise for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Whether it be a dress down day at work, a coffee morning, a carol concert or organising a local pub quiz with friends, you’ll be amazed at how much you can raise – and how much fun you’ll have! - by planning your own event. Please help us raise the £3,500 we need to meet our target – don’t let us be beaten by the snow!” “The charity welcome any type of event - large or small – as every penny raised really does help. Organising your own event is a great chance to have fun and raise money at the same time, whilst making a real difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer. Anyone wanting to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care will be given full support from us here in the local office so give us a call on 0114 279 3010 as we’d love to hear from you!”
  5. Every penny from this event will be coming directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care, obviously there are costs involved with this event, for every ÂŁ1 we raise 22p is invested to generate future funds. In Sheffield alone we fund over 30 Marie Curie Nurses who last year provided over 20,000 hours of care to 332 people at the end of their lives, giving them the choice to die at home. So that we can reach more and more people we need the people of Sheffield to take on this fantastic challenge to raise more much needed funds. If you wanted to discuss this more with me, please do get in touch, my email address is [email protected]
  6. Marie Curie Cancer Care are on the count down to The Big Zip 2010 on Sunday October 17th 2010 at Endcliffe Park but still have places left to fill on the event. We’re calling all daredevils in Sheffield, who think they’re brave enough, to come and take a trip down our big zip next month! This is the first time a zipwire challenge event has ever taken place from a crane in Sheffield and we’re on the hunt for adrenaline junkies from across the area to sign up to get harnessed up, climb to the top of a 30m high crane platform and zip 260m along a highwire over the park. A zipwire challenge like this is a real buzz and a proper adrenaline rush that almost anyone and everyone can take part in. We’ve already got grandmas signed up to zip, along with students, couples of all ages, groups of friends and workmates who are all giving it a go in aid of the local Marie Curie Nursing Service. Not only are they going to have a great time but they’re also going to be raising money that will be sending Marie Curie Nurses to care, comfort and support terminally ill people and their families, at home, in their time of need. Registration for this event is ÂŁ10 and open to participants aged 16 and over with a weight restriction of 16 stone per person. All you need to do to book a place on this thrilling event is call the local office on 0114 279 3010 or email [email protected]
