  7. After an approach by the rather brilliant Rother Valley Fundraising Group in Sheffield, Manor Operatic Society has chosen Marie Curie Cancer Care as the beneficiary of charity bucket collections at ALL FIVE of their amazing upcoming performances of The Wizard of Oz at Sheffield City Hall this month. The fundraising group are now desperate for local people to sign up to lend a hand in manning the collections to make sure they raise as much as possible. There are 4 evening shows Wednesday 16th - Saturday 19th May, starting at 7.15pm, and a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 19th May. The collection will take place at the end of the show so volunteers will need to arrive at about 9.15pm and the collection will be over by 10.15pm. (For the matinee, 4.45pm and finished by 5.30pm). Collectors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All the money raised will go towards helping Marie Curie Nurses to provide more end of life care, totally free, for patients in their own homes. This is an absolutely superb fundraising opportunity for Marie Curie Cancer Care so a huge thank you must go to Manor Operatic Society for choosing to support us this time round. If you are able to volunteer to come along and help out then please contact Liz Howlett in the local Sheffield fundraising office on 0114 279 3010 or email [email protected]

  15. Marie Curie Cancer Care is asking people in Sheffield to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party this summer. It can be as simple as a cuppa and cakes in the office, a vintage inspired tea party or even a larger ‘blooming great street party’. It’s a great way to get together with friends and family to do something easy and fun for charity. The official tea party season is from June 12 to July 12 but it doesn’t matter if you’re a little late - the important thing is just for you to hold a tea party! Your party can be as simple or as extravagant as you like, from a cuppa with colleagues to getting the whole family round for a gathering in the garden. Your tea party will allow Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes so what are you waiting for? Nationally we're hoping to raise one million pounds from the campaign this year which will help provide 50,000 hours of Marie Curie Nursing care. Call 08700 340 040 or visit http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty for more information and your free Blooming Great Tea Party fundraising pack. For more information just give us a ring in the local Sheffield fundraising office on 0114 279 3010 or email [email protected]
  16. Marie Curie Cancer Care is holding a summer evening walk at Castle Howard on Sunday 31st July 2011 and the charity is inviting people from across South Yorkshire to take part. The 10k walk at Castle Howard is one of a series of unique ‘Walk Ten’ events being held at 20 spectacular venues across the country, supported by HomeServe, Britain’s dedicated home emergency and repairs experts. The Castle Howard walk starts at 6pm and at the end of the walk, there will be fun activities throughout the evening, such as fireworks, live music, and picnics, in celebration of the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Registration is ÂŁ10 per person (children go free) but everyone is encouraged to raise as much as possible to support Marie Curie Cancer Care, whose Nurses provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes and in the charity’s hospices. Castle Howard is one of the premier stately homes of England, home to the Howard family and a short drive from the City of York. The extensive parkland and formal gardens, where peacocks roam, provide a stunning location for an evening walk, giving people the chance to explore hidden gardens, striking monuments, lakes and fountains. Local fundraiser Liz Howlett says: “Walk Ten is a brilliant occasion, giving people the chance to walk 10km in stunning surroundings, but also to recognise the dedication of Marie Curie Nurses, who work through the day and night providing care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses. There’s a real festival atmosphere at the end of every walk where friends and families come together. Then at 10pm, which is the time Marie Curie Nurses start their night shifts across the country, candles are lit and everyone is silent for a few moments to think about the nurses and the people they are caring for. The fun then continues late into the summer evening. This event is well worth travelling to and I hope to see lots of people from South Yorkshire there on the day”. This year’s 20 Walk Ten venues are: * New venue for 2011 Castle Howard, North Yorkshire* Beaulieu, Hampshire Stourhead, Wiltshire Stormont Estate, County Down Athelstaneford, East Lothian Croft Castle, Herefordshire* Dumfries House, Ayrshire* Margam Park, Neath Port Talbot* Clapham Common, London* Tatton Park, Cheshire Boughton House, Northamptonshire Eastbourne, East Sussex* Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire* Herrington Country Park, Sunderland* Shugborough, Staffordshire Hill of Tarvit, Fife* Omagh, County Tyrone* Coombe Country Park, Warwickshire* Belladrum, Inverness-shire* For further information please contact Liz Howlett, Community Fundraiser, on email [email protected] or 0114 279 3010
  17. I am posting from the local Marie Curie Cancer Care Fundraising Office to let people in Sheffield know about the work of our Fundraising Groups around South Yorkshire. These groups are normally small groups of volunteers from relatively local areas, who give their time to support the vital work of the local nursing service throughout the year. They meet occasionally and stage a variety of events, sharing the great enjoyment that comes with the wonderful achievements they make on behalf of terminally ill patients in the local area. We already have three fundraising groups like this right here in South Yorkshire, (one of which is up in the Chapeltown/Ecclesfield area of the city) and I’m currently working with our supporters in the S11 area of the Sheffield to bring together a similar, brand new, group in their local community. We think a group like this will certainly make fundraising more fun for our supporters in S11, giving them a way and a chance to be involved in supporting and raising funds year round in support of the local nursing service. We are looking to hold a very informal, open get together for our supporters - existing and new - who live in S11 in the coming weeks and I’m posting to extend an invitation to anyone in the local community who'd like to come along. The get together is a chance for us to meet you, for you to meet us, to hear more about Marie Curie Cancer Care, what’s happening in the charity, information on the care that is being provided in Sheffield and our exciting plans for developing a group in the local area. The get together is happening on Thursday 23rd June 2011 from 6pm - 8pm. If you'd like to come along and would like details of the venue etc please contact me on [email protected] or in the local office on 0114 279 3010.
  18. Marie Curie Cancer Care is hosting it’s second award winning ‘Great Escape Challenge’ on the 21st May in the Peak District and are on the look out for some event volunteers to help them out! The Great Escape Challenge is Marie Curie’s flagship corporate challenge that last year won an award for its excellence. We have a 38km course with 10 challenges specifically designed for Marie Curie Cancer Care by Northstar Events, the event company will be in charge of all logistics on the day and we will be supporting them to deliver the event to participants. The participants will be trekking 10km and cycling 28km as well as working together to complete 10 different challenges, none of which will be revealed to them until the Friday night briefing. The weekend will begin early for the volunteers with a campsite opening on the evening of Thursday 19th May at 6pm. On Friday the 20th May volunteers will be trained for the sector that they will be working on. These roles won’t be allocated until you arrive at the event; however most of the roles will involve being out in the hills all day. Volunteer roles will include marshalling the car park, overseeing team challenge rules, marking challenge results and manning start/finish/lunch areas. On the Saturday the corporate teams will take on the challenge which will be followed in the evening by a prize giving and celebration, including a live band and DJ, you will be needed to help out with a few general jobs but for most of the evening you will be able to enjoy the party! Volunteers will be provided with a Great Escape t-shirt on the day as well as all of your meals throughout the course of the event. You will need to bring your own camping equipment and clothing suitable for hot and wet conditions. For more information about the event itself please visit http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/en-gb/events/corporate-events/great-escape-challenge-2011/ If this is something that you’d like to be part of please get in contact with Katie Grinter on 0114 279 3010 or email [email protected] so we can get all information out to you ahead of the event. Our charity aim, to increase the money we raise to ensure we are able to deliver the right care, in the right place, at the right time, still stands. At the moment we are absolutely desperate for volunteers to offer their help at collections in Sheffield as part of our Great Daffodil Appeal 2011 during February and March. You’ll be surprised by how much you can raise in just a couple of hours! Every daffodil badge exchanged for a donation will help us to provide more nursing care to people terminally ill at home. f you think you are able to give just two hours to help collect at a venue near you in the coming weeks then please feel free to contact me on either [email protected] or on 0114 279 3010 to let me know which collection you’d like to sign up for so we can get you booked in asap.
