There is a lot of tax now on waste disposal.

 

The WEEE directive ... "The directive imposes the responsibility for the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment on the manufacturers or distributors of such equipment.

 

Do the councils claim the money from the manufacturers?

One time a I got rid of an ironing board . I put it in a field to get rid of it. A few days later it was in the newspapers. Angry looking farmer with a cow with an ironing board stuck around its neck. This was in the 80s. I thought it was funny at the time to see the picture in the paper.
