Holiday Ideas (Abroad)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Lookign at going abroad in the October half term holidays with my fiance and 2 children (will be 5 and 1 when we go). Any suggestions as to where to go?

Would like somewhere with good weather, plenty for families/kids to do.

I've only ever been abroad twice and I'm not too sure which countries have good weather this late on in the year?. We don't have a budget as such but don't want to pay a crazy amount. would like to go all inclusive (buying drinks all day to keep ourselves and the kids cool and hydrated would soon mount up otherwise!

Also if anyone has any suggestions on where would be best to book the holiday for a good deal then please say :)

Thanks in advance for any replies

Rikki

For decent weather in November it would have to be the Canaries if you are going short haul.

Hey Rikki

We've travelled a LOT over the past 18 years with our children, all over the beaches of Europe (I kitesurf). By far the best location right upto the end of October is The Algarve.

It wasn't a place we'd considered upto about 6 years ago, the in-laws swore by it, but the stigma of being a 'pensioners retreat' shouldn't be listened to.

The Algarve is strewn with old quirky villages and exuberant marine towns alike, namely Lagos & Portimao to the West, Villamora and Albufeira central then Tavira, Monte Gordo and San Antonio to the East. We prefer staying at Cabanas, it's a beautiful tiny fishing village just off the edge of Tavira. Tavira is the main town for the area, not not too busy to distract from the peace and quiet most people are attracted to in the Algarve.

Near Portimao is the main water theme park (Slide & Splash) for the nippers if needed. Bit expensive to git in high season, cost us £120 for a family of 5, but by the end of the day we felt after sampling all the slides it was pretty much worth it, very clean and friendly, which goes for the rest of the country too. There's something about the Portuguese, a lot more friendlier than the Spanish, dunno what it is.

The other reason we prefer Cabanas is it's near the Spanish border, where we drive across and make our way down to Saville and Cadiz now and again, around a 1.5-2hr journey.

Travelrepublic.co.uk has never let us down.

Here's a tip:

The main road (IP1/A22) is now a TOLL :mad: and the charge is 90c/km :gag: which meant if we were to have driven from Alvor in the west where we were staying last month to the Spanish border it would've cost about £80 just in toll charges!!! Disgusting for a 90 mile journey, and about £15 in fuel. Without a TomTom it would've been a nightmare, telling it to avoid MOTORWAYS on all occasions. This put about 30% of time on our main journeys BUT it gave us the opportunity to see loads more than just hot tailing it along the motorway. If you did decide to do a long East bound drive, consider jumping online at the hotel where you're staying and getting a cheap room in another hotel. Not as daunting as we first envisaged and had a great 2 day stop over in Cabanas (on two occasions :D ) cost us about £50/night, it's a buzz having a Holiday in a Holiday
