harvey19   541 #481 Posted December 15, 2010 A good reason why candidates should think before opening their big mouths and promising whatever they think people who might vote for them want to hear just so they can get their stupid faces in the local paper Also a good reason why manifesto promises should not be legally binding - they aren't worth the trees destroyed and the hot air produced I would have put it differently but I think we are in agreement. hitch_1980   10 #484 Posted December 15, 2010 "If you don't vote for something you can't complain about the outcome is an old saying" -- ah yes, that old saying. Bag - you constantly insist on taking this discussion in circles, so I'm getting serious deja vu. I've explained my position on student fees a number of times, so I'm not going to get back in to it. As for 'who' I support in this - the people!  Disobedience is the foundation of true liberty!  With that last quote.....essentially you wont listen to anyone and protest at anything. As the opposite of the quote is "The Obedient must be slaves" - you believe that anyone who accepts change must be a slave.
 Share this content via...
alas_alas   10 #485 Posted December 15, 2010 (edited) I won't listen to anyone, and won't protest at anything?  The full quote is 'Disobedience is the foundation of true liberty. The obedient must be slaves'. How is the last part of the quote its 'opposite'? To 'obey' is not to 'accept change', quite the opposite:  v. o·beyed, o·bey·ing, o·beys v.tr. 1. To carry out or fulfill the command, order, or instruction of. 2. To carry out or comply with (a command, for example). v.intr. To behave obediently.  You should probably know that.  Roll over! bethwebb   10 #490 Posted December 15, 2010 Vote for the party who offers what you want and encourage others to do so. Better than protesting afterwards.  Most students I know DID vote Lib Dem who DID promise to offer what they wanted.  (And DID go back on it, hence then protests....) For those who did I would praise for voting for what they wanted, but what percentage of studetns and their parents did that I wonder.
