L00b
I just noticed the Council has announced plans to cut LEGI funding by £1.2m this year, as part of its 4-year £250m cuts. Is Sheffield BiG on the way out
espadrille
I guess they may cut the number of staff and keep it going if they can.Depends on what they spend at the moment on staff costs I guess
indizine
SCC are only reducing the LEGI funding by the amount central goverment have reduced it by, thus it's not actually a council cut in the same sense as other cuts, though yes, something has to go. Doncaster is doing the same I heard today. You could say that some cuts directly affect people whereas other cuts like not giving someone £500 for a website will not. indizine
what im saying is that LEGI funding was awarded to the council (as it was many others, though not all) and they are now retracting a portion of it. It's aside from any other cuts the council are making but will of course add it into the total amount so of course it looks worse. The Council will decide where to make cuts as far as the other cuts are concerned, but central government has decided to make the LEGI cuts, so what im pointing out is this isnt core council expenditure being cut. It was money they had to bid for and which could only be spent on achieving certain outcomes for business-related activities e.g. business start ups, job creation, etc. Sure, not having it will be felt by loss of jobs through those initiatives created by LEGI funding, but it was only short-term funding ie think to end in 2011, so people will still start a business just like they did before LEGI came around. Being grant-reliant to get your business off the ground isn't a good prospect IMO. Nice that it pays for stuff, but let's face it if someone is going to do it, they will find a way. steveroberts
To be honest, I never understood LEGI...BiG always appeared, to me, to replicate what Business Link were doing anyway! PS BiG outsource much of their work, I suspect it is the supplier base which will bear the brunt of the cuts.
