New venue opening in the city centre next month, and once opened we will be looking for local DJ's to work for us (experience IS necessary) looking for jocks across all types of music, so if you specialise in a certain type we may still be interested, As we will be running a variety of nights.

If your interested please, send the following to my e-mail address and we'll be in touch soon.

1. Information of music style and type of DJ - a good one

2. Experience and CV if available - aren’t they the same?

3. Track list of 20 songs you'd play. - depends on the genre of the night and what the audience are reacting to, playing a set track list is not the sign of a good jock?

4. MP3 demo if available, make it no longer than 15 mins - mic work or just mixing?

5. Nights available to work - are you going to tailor your nights to the dj available?

6. Rates. - give me a price and let’s discuss

7. Contact details, (website etc if you have them) - If I email you then you have my e mail address automatically

8. Any over information you think is relevant. - Don’t you mean other??

That may seem sarcastic but I feel the post you have made may actually put people off applying.

I have been working for 22 years now across all genres and still do a dance night and a r'n'b night every week at 2 venues plus occasionally at a venue more know for its indie so I tailor my listing and indeed the way I dj to the venue and the night.

I could do you a smoothly mixed mp3 demo easily, just set digitaldj going (which I don’t use) and let it do the work but then again you could stick a pc system and let it run itself all night without the need for a jock.

I would never put my rates on either, if we are good enough then you should pay the rate for the venue and the talent (again I earn 3 different rates for the nights I do). If I was the best dj in town and quoted you 200 a night but could prove through experience and records what effect I have had on places and taking at previous venues but you also get a quote from Johnny with his ipod mixer for 80 quid who are you going to pick?? (That’s no disrespect for anyone who uses a pc to work with) - I think I would still be looking for work as you have a business to run and a profit margin to hit.

But if you came and saw me work (and I have hired dj's before and personally been to see them working first as many times as possible) then we could discuss a rate to suit both parties with a possibility of sliding scales as the venue grows and you have the confidence that the person(s) you employ have the ability to do the job to the level you require instead of finding out that the cheaper option is no good after a couple of months in which case the venue could have lost any initial impetus and you are back at square 1 looking for someone who has to build a venue up

If you put up more info on the venue then you will stand a better chance of finding the right person. To say you want to keep it hush hush does not say a lot about your promotional techniques as you are hardly pre-selling the venue in a free and open environment that could be creating a buzz

1st person "you heard about the new bar opening in town, I read about it on sheff forum"

2nd person "really, what did it say about it"

1st person "nothing, its all hush hush"

2nd person "oh right :( "

See what I mean

That said - good luck in the venture sir - lets us all know when it opens

If we're talking weeknights in a bar or smallish nightclub then £80 is a decent rate and I'm no johnny with an ipod mixer thankyouverymuch. I also didnt struggle to send this guy an email. Not saying I'll get a gig at this place but with the attitude some people show its surprising they get any gigs at all.

First off i'd like to thank everyone for these posts and the huge ammount of e-mails I have recvied, I have replied to some of them and I promise I will reply to all of them personally just give me time, I ask you to please bare with me, thanks.

As for people stating that they want to know about the type of music etc the simple reason I'm not stating what we want exactly is because we are looking at diffrent types of music on diffrent nights and since nothing is set in stone yet I'm keeping my options open.

As for infomation about the venue, it's not my call to say anything yet but when I'm allowed I will, we are just keeping things quiet till we have an exact opening date.

also I must stress i have no time to read PM's so e-mails only please, sorry.

Again thank you so much for all your comments and e-mails, I will reply soon.

Kev Laws

Thats my point exactly - IF we are talking about weekdays in a bar. But we dont know. The point i was trying to put across (and i was in no way trying to run anyone down, except the i-pod jocks that charge £30 a night lowering the price for everyone else) was that if we dont know what the night is i.e length of set, size of venue, nights required, solo jock or set playing. All of these affect the pricing.

I agree that 80 is a reasonable rate for the scenario you put forward, indeed for one of my residencies i get paid less than that but that is because i have another residency with the company and i'm trying to build up a brand new night so i have agreed a sliding scale which will increase as the takings go up.

If i came across as having an attitude then it wasnt meant that way, i was trying to offer a cronstructive evaluation of the request showing where it may lead people to put information that may hinder the application or even put them off applying for the job.

As i put in my other post i wish Kev luck in his venture (kev can i ask what role is there? are you the owner, manager? only asking with you asking for the apps to be sent to you) and may i also wish you luck as well Craig in your bid.

Right cheers for that chief, I wasn't so much surprised that people had further questions to ask but the series of responses in the thread made it sound as if some DJs expect gigs to come gift wrapped. Indeed if it put some people off applying then great, less competition for the rest of us! Now I'll just sit patiently refreshing my inbox as I await the response from Mr Laws!
