Car insurance renewel - claim made with no claims discount - how'd it work?

Recommended Posts

If they jacked my premium up on a protected NCB contract to compensate for a claim, I would do the following.

Ask a near neighbour if you could use their address, and then phone up for a quote without mentioning the claim. If it is a lot less than your renewal quote, phone up and tell them, if nothing is done contact The Insurance Ombudsman.

well I wish I`d read this before!! my car was hit at a supermarket, I wasnt even in at the time, had 9 years no claims and yet on renewal had gone up hugely, I did try to agrue the point but got nowhere.

Protected no claims discount is exactly that, it guarantees you'll receive x% off the base premium as a discount for being claim free. It does not guarantee that the premium will not be adjusted at renewal to account for the claim made.

I've always wondered why people bothered with protected no claims. It seems to be something that a lot of people fall for. It is usually not transferable and your premium will probably go up at your current insurer anyway if you stick with them. Easy money for the insurers.
