Zomoniac 10 #2644 Posted October 8, 2008 If it is used to describe evil it is an adjective. If it is an evil act it is a verb. We are talking about something people do and that is a verb as in hit, kill, shoot, maim, blind, torture etc . But it doesn't work like that. I can hit, kill, shoot, maim, blind or torture you. I can't evil you. "Zomoniac evilled (or eviled, it's not a word so it doesn't matter) Grahame" doesn't make sense. It's not a valid sentence. You can say "Zomoniac committed an act of evil on Grahame", but that makes it a noun. On an unrelated note, exactly how literally do you take the bible? You seem to believe every word in the Old Testament. If you bump into a woman on the street do you ask her if she's menstruating so you know whether you need to wash your clothes and bathe in water and not touch anything until evening? Are you anti-gay? Pro-polygamy? Just curious.
 Share this content via...

Archelaus 10 #2652 Posted October 8, 2008 Dear wise people of SF, I realise that three quarters of the world’s population believe in a god and live, to greater or lesser extent, by some religious code or other. I have always been an atheist myself, but lately have contemplated the unwelcome possibility that I’m wrong, and can look forward to an eternity of hellfire and damnation. Not a pleasant prospect, so I thought I’d try Christianity and see if it suits me. I’ve read the guide book, and found it to be most enlightening - but clearly I must raise my grave concern that our government, and those who have built our legal system, have failed to go through the small print of the various books of the Bible. It‘s all very clear, and would have saved us a lot of messing around with our own Acts of Parliament if everybody had just read the Bible first. The Ten Commandments seem pretty clear, though I‘m not sure quite how far ‘coveting’ extends. Clearly I must not covet my neighbour’s wife, but where it says I must not covet his house, does that include extensions? My wife has expressed much envy over my neighbour’s new conservatory - if this is included within the generic ‘house’ description, must I kill her? When I burn a Pig on the stake as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? What methods of neighbourly smiting are acceptable these days without offending the rest of the street, or would my other neighbours probably want to join in? I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? She isn’t an oil painting but she can turn in a good day’s work and has all her own teeth. Can I sell her on eBay? I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Kosovans, but not Muslims. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Muslims? Also, does Scotland classify as a neighbouring nation? There is clearly a problem with the weekend retail hours my local corner shop owner works and sanctity of the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or is there some kind of death squad I can call either in the council or the church? A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality (Lev 18:22 ). I think I agree, because I’m quite partial to whelks but really don’t like faeces. Are we right in this assumption? If so, do we deserve to be stoned or crucified if we’re caught eating crabsticks? Also, if we follow Lev 18:22, should we club our camp neighbour to death? Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be hawk like, or is there some leeway here? Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) Any advice would be most welcomed.
