  1. Alabama,

Thanks for this -religion doesnt come in to it. Some brave Irish lads from the Munsters, Leinsters and Dublin Fusiers in Walkley Cemetery who are not forgotten by this Englishman. I suspected Lambert was unmarried. Apparently he suffered a bad head wound in India and there is a plaque to him out there. One thing -whether Shamrock or not- he would appreciate something green. Anyone know his birth date/date of death?

  2. In some countries and cultures this unfortunate man would have been shot dead on the spot and no questions asked. The days of keeping the Queens Peace by the use of a short length of Burmese teak, consensus and authority are long gone. In these situations things often do not go to plan- I think the police officers and their dog are worthy of our acknowledgement. Why does the Star use the phrase' cops' for goodness sake?

  3. All,

Apologies for my rather 'ratty' last comment- since following this up I have been made aware of frustrations about this issue. It appears that no one is aware who is responsible for Wardsend- the Council look like taking it over. I don't think in these circumstances there is any possiblity of an exhumation and where would you put Lambert's remains? Having been up to Wardsend -its always going to be a vunerable site. It appears that his headstone was repaired/relaid fairly recently.

    Regards

  4. I tend to think that the redevelopment of the tarnished and scruffy Markets area is as pressing as both Sevenstone and the Moor. Point is Sheffield has been cavalier towards the retention of its old buildings and that is a widely held view. It never had the city scape of the great Midland and Northern cities for various historical reasons. One thing is sure- planners and councillors and architects who have the power to mould our city scapes are often the worse culprits. Look how they ruined the character of the Old Queens Head for instance. The state of local politics certainly doesn't help.

  5. This thread is surely reflecting the Forum at its best. LadyStar- agree with you in many respects-especially about Nottingham. One of the biggest urban myths about Sheffield is the scale of the damage done to central Sheffield by the Luftwaffe. Its arguable that more damage was wrought by the Council post war. Some of the thoughts on Sheffield's historic buildings expressed by Councillors and presumably planners that I have come across have left me in a cold sweat

  6. accuse me of sitting on the fence on this one- but I feel that the Bethel Sunday School should be kept and the 'pepperpot' also. That being said- there is a definate need for retail development but I don't find Sevenstone- as it stands- particularly interesting.

The Grosvenor contains asbestos based material, I understand. City Lofts looks ok from Howard Street but has had a detrimental effect on the town hall when viewed from Leopold Street. The new fire station is quite a nice looking building. One poster mentions the HHB- however their published stance occasionally indicates a desire that Sheffield should have stayed as it was in the nineteen seventies. Frankly the damage has been done in central Sheffield [and the suburbs] years ago. Let's think about the conservation challenges that face us apart from Sevenstone[ as it stands] ie the threat to our interesting pubs, the task facing the Manor Lodge site and- and - the desperate need to do the right thing by the Markets area and the Castle remains. Also the threats in the suburbs, especially the less fashionable ones. Conservation issues have been heightened by Park Hill but lets keep politics and politicians out of them because conservation isn't a vote winner.
