  1. A really loud or low-flying jet aircraft just passed over us (Sheffield 7) at 11am did anyone else hear this?
  2. Thanks for the suggestion Dan 2802 . I phoned around and finally found one: MTA EV & Hybrid Specialist, 1 Harvest Lane S3 8EF and booked a service there. On the phone they said they link to Renault's computer system for the servicing checklist, and run diagnostic test on the battery, so I guess that sounds OK... Fingers crossed!
  3. We've got to have our Renault Zoe serviced annually to Renault standards, under the contract, but that doesn't have to be a Renault dealer (which I'd prefer to avoid) Does anyone know any garage around Sheffield with Renault / EV expertise and equipment? Thanks

  8. Since I originally posted this I have downsized by sharing, so I've only got half an allotment now; more manageable. Thanks for the replies from two interested people. Sorry my reply is late coming, I am abroad at the moment. I might still consider sharing this small area, if you would be interested in entirely organic and vegan growing? I would also ask do you live in Rotherham?

I've got an allotment in Rotherham (Broom about 1 mile from town centre) and would welcome a share, joint work or divided up, it's too big for me to manage Rent is cheap and paid for this year anyway (£24) I'm also asking around in Rotherham of course (Is there a rotherham Forum?) Looking forward to hearing from anyone to discuss. (By the way there are empty allotments on the site).

  12. It's not just a 7.5% rise. The FirstDay Sheffield ticket goes from £4 to £4.80 - I reckon that's 20%. They did this last time - there was a headline "8%" rise but many tickets went up more. "We Want Our Buses Back" is alive and well and getting ready for a howl of protest.
  13. Just out of interest, can anyone remember a local radio phone-in programme, I think it was the 80s, which covered political stuff? The presenter was really clued up, he seemed to have an encyclopaedic knowledge about everything, worldwide politics etc... He replied and discussed with his callers, from a moderate/left-of-centre viewpoint, challenging views based only on right-wing prejudice.

I remember the times when there were far more, cheaper buses. Complaints were fewer I think, and mainly from non-bus users who didn't like subsidising them. OK they were dirtier, but the quantity made up for this. So what do we know for sure? Subsidy puts public money into running buses, this probably happens in every city of the world. Privatised bus operators pocket some of the resulting revenue, and there's no clear evidence to show they run better services in return - many countries do still have excellent government owned ones. Under privatisation the sheer number of routes and services had reduced, quite a lot. Bus use is almost stagnant, and in the public mind a discredited form of transport. There are various alternatives to private sector buses, the public and industry debate continues, personally I've got no particular dogmatic method, and admit I don't yet know enough to preach. But I'd like to add one more point. Back in 1985 we had more buses, when we didn't know about climate change. Now we do, and traffic* contributes about 20% of CO2 I believe, shouldn't we do something dramatic to increase bus use again? Or should we just accept that we are here, and no-one has the right to question the situation? *Even electric cars, they use a lot electricity - and in the short/medium term this is adding to CO2 levels.

  17. Will you help with some research please? I would like your views on South Yorkshire buses from your experience (a few quick words would be very welcome) if you don't mind. Comments can be anything about buses - a certain bus route, last time you took a bus, fares or passes, the bus companies, timetables, general comment, whatever ... The idea is that replies will be used in material for "We Want Our Buses Back" and will be made anonymous by using just initials, or 'anon' if you prefer. Thanks very much if you have a moment to help in this way
  18. That's interesting I didn't know about the student fare rises. The main corridor prices will, of course, be little comfort to those who don't live on them. My typical journey is from Sheffield to Rotherham - £4.50 day saver cheapest option, but by train it's only £2.50 ... and twice as fast ... no comparison!
  19. On Wed. 2 Sept. 2009, We Want Our Buses Back, presented a petition during a lobby of Sheffield City Council. It was the monthly public council meeting, allowing observers and questions from the public. Calvin from We Want Our Buses Back spoke, asking the council to support 'First' drivers, condemn the attack on workers' pay ... and for progress on re-regulation of bus services. Ian Auckland, the Lib Dem council's transport spokesman replied. He said he had spoken informally to trade union representatives, hoped the dispute could be settled, not least for the effect on drivers and their families ... And he hoped that any resolution doesn't put up fares. On re-regulation he said he was still awaiting staff guidance. The new law is in place allowing this, but putting it into practice is a long process, requiring consultation. The PTE (Passenger Transport Executive) are working out plans for South Yorkshire. Outside, the response to the We Want Our Buses Back stall was great. Before and after the meeting it was almost non-stop with people coming up and talking, and clearly as angry as ever about Sheffield buses.   21. UK bus services are bad, expensive, and getting worse. It's official, see the current OFT report (details and link from http://www.wwobb.org). From this year, councils have the power to introduce bus service regulation. There's going to be a lobby demanding Sheffield Council implements this. Please join us if you can.... Wednesday (2 Sept 09) 12.00 outside Town Hall, then at 2pm going into the Council meeting to present a petition.
  22. I also hope something good comes out of this. The current system is making us have to think in terms of "Bad" competition (predatory etc.) and "Good" competition (new services, lower prices - as if!!) In fact competition's not been proven in practice to benefit the public service that public transport is. This isn't Sony Vs. Hitachi (new technology, plenty of choices, plenty of scope to innovate, whatever flavour you like...) It's more like the postal service - a natural monopoly could just be better, competition leaves us all poorer. This report won't do much but I hope it paves the way to regulation as the first step. I'm going to be at the lobby demanding Sheffield Council implements regulation:- Wednesday (2 Sept 09) 12.00 outside Town Hall for 2pm (First Council meeting of the new term) Coming?

I'm interested to see what will happen - things will change because councils now have power to regulate the services again, to make sure companies don't just cherry-pick the profitable routes and forget they provide a public service.   24. This poll is a great idea... can the 47/48 be added as a choice? Or ALL routes? I'd like to know which routes people meant who chose "Other" - - - We Want Our Buses Back is holding a public meeting THIS Thursday 30th July, 7pm-9pm at the Quaker Meeting House, St James Street, city centre (near the Cathedral) to discuss the drivers' fight alongside the campaign for re-regulation of public transport. We have invited local politicians, union representatives and the media to hear, and contribute to, the case for public transport. Sheffield City Council apparently has plans for bus re-regulation. Join us to continue to pressure our representatives to carry out this popular and much needed policy. All supporters and interested parties welcome.
