  1. Perhaps Tony should be working for S1 with all his regeneration knowledge?
  2. LOL! I don't work for Sheffield One unfortunately, but I wish I did!
  3. Anyone know whats happened to Poptastics plans to return to Sheffield?
  4. This is for Tony Where the hell do you get all your information from and where's the evidence? Also why are your post's always so negative, they are really depressing!
  5. Apparently Sheffield One is bang on schedule with the next phase now currently progressing with the construction of the new World Class Square outside the train station, which at the minute is pretty hard to miss if you frequent the station. Also the £12.5 million investment programme to transform the City Hall into a state-of-the-art, regional cultural and conference centre is well underway. Seems like progress to me. Its important to remember that the S1 Masterplan will not be fully realised until 2009 with new exciting investments being added all the time. http://www.sheffield1.com/newsDetail.asp?ID=46
  6. Excuse me Tony, .. but please don't misquote me, I never said "A few people need to understand that in national terms, the image of Sheffield is regarded almost as third world and with a backward council that would not even let an IKEA into the city it has absolutely no chance of improving on that." that was originally posted by MobileB. I think you'll find that this is exactly what the city is trying to do - which is why Sheffield One, a partnership of Sheffield City Council, Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships was created, to take Sheffield into the future like the other big cities already have done. Maybe these link's will help convince you: http://www.sheffield1.com/home.html http://www.sheffieldfirst.net/ Would Marks & Spencers and Debenhams not be noteworthy then?
  7. The Showroom Cinema/Bar is opposite the train station facing the roundabout which is currently being demolished.
  8. All doom and gloom forcast for Sheffield then? If no one within Sheffield is even prepared to discuss the possibilties of International brands estabilishing themselves in the city then there's no hope for Sheffield ever becoming a booming, vibrant, successful city. That's the trouble with the Sheffield City Council and alot of the people here, there's no sense of confidence in Sheffield or pride in its promotion.
  9. I don't think this is true at all and even if it was millions of visitors from outside Sheffield visit the city centre each year. So your saying the Council has no involvement or influence over these matters at all?
  10. We already have French Connection and Ted Baker stores in Sheffield at Meadowhall or do you mean in the city centre? It would be very intresting to see a list of the stores which the council has approved for the New Retail Quarter. I agree Steel City House would make an awsome looking department store, its for too nice to be offices! Once the New Retail Quarter is up and running along with all the other regeneration plans I think Harvey Nicks or Selfridges will look at Sheffield more attractively.
  11. Anyone think we will ever get a Harvey Nicks store in Sheffield? If dirty leeds can have one why can't we? John Lewis snubbed leeds in favour of us and now Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh all have bigger Harvey Nicks stores than leeds. Even if we only get a little store in the New Retail Quarter it would be better than none to help boost Sheffield's retail image further.
  12. Perhaps you should both try: http://www.gaydar.co.uk
  13. ??? Could you clarify please? Queens Court in Leeds is really good on the right night, but it's not like any gaybars we have in Sheffield. Guess what I'm saying is the gay scene and gay community is just as diverse as straight culture and can't be pigeon holed into one thing, which a lot straight people assume it is. It's certainly never dead when I've gone out in town before at just gone 8pm, especially in the summer, depends where you go I suppose, which you could say about any city or town to be honest.
  14. The next CLIMAX is Friday 20th August by the way!
  15. A new block of 43 apartments on Trafalgar Street has been given planning permission by councillors as well as another new city living development on Fitzwilliam Street. http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/press/news/release.asp?akey=2107
  16. 6 gaybars?! This is Sheffield not Leeds! There are only 2 gay bars in Sheffield I am aware of these are Dempseys and Club Xs. Could you tell me where the other 4 are please because I would love to be spoilt for choice. As for The Cossack that shut down ages ago and for goods reason, it was little more than a garage! Both Dempseys and Xs very cheap and nasty places with overpriced drinks, and to get to Xs which is in one of the most disgusting places in Sheffield - Burngreave cost's a fortune. Alot of small towns in the UK have better gay place's than Sheffield, it's so embarassing when gay friends from other cities come over to see me and they want to sample Sheffield's gayscene. I'm just thankful we have Climax, shame it only once a month. Report this Post | Link | IP
  17. There are plenty of so called mixed bars in Sheffield, but I wouldn't feel comfortable snogging or holding hands with another fella in any of them! Can you imagine being in a pub on West Street say Varsity or BRB and two guys decided to hold hands, a perfectly acceptable thing to do with your partner in public if your straight. But heaven forbid if 2 guys did that in a mixed public place and I should know! The majority of the straight people in there would just ignorantly stare till their eyeballs fell on the fall. Some would take it a step further and threw verbal abuse, some even further would threw punches! Stopped going to Polysexual at the Forum on a Saturday night when it was running (Promoted has being a mixed night), although the door staff did used to warn groups off straight guys that homophobic behaviour would not be tolerated. Numerous time's I was made to feel very uncomfortable and even got spit at whilst dancing and called all the usual gay-names, which actually make me laugh! Not exactly what you want, when you've been working all week and you just want to go out and have a good time. So YEAH I do think there is a genuine need for gay venues in Sheffield.
  18. Don't forget it's Viva Climax on Saturday!!
  19. Anyone know how much the Sheffield One regeneration plans going to cost? http://www.sheffield1.com/home.html
  20. So if were the 5th largest in the UK, (which includes Glasgow, bigger than Sheffield) that would make us the 4th biggest in England, yeah?
  21. Yes we are about 5 if not more years behind Leeds when it comes to regeneration of our city but at least its finally happening now, unlike alot of towns and cities within the UK. I'm sorry any Leeds fans in this forum but Sheffield still wins hands down on friendliness, crime, sport/entertainment facilities, theatres/museums, Supertram (poor Leeds just had there Supertram plans trashed by the Government) and of course dont forget the 2nd most visited National Park in the world - The Peak District within our cities boundary. All these things can be enjoyed by people who don't earn a fortune unlike Leeds where unless your a high earner you can't experience all the benefits of the city like it's designer shops, luxury apartments and posh wine bars. At least here in Sheffield everyone is catered for and not socially excluded on the scale the poor people of Leeds are.
  22. Wow! new building looks great, luv the black bricks! http://www.sinclairs-china.co.uk/Feature.htm West Street shaping up to be a great part of the city centre, you can really see the new face of Sheffield developing rapidly.
  23. Now that Sinclairs has been demolished and relocated further up West Street, what is going to be built there to replace? This part of West Street looks like a huge chunk has just been bitten off by Godzilla!
  24. The City of Leeds has a population of about 421,000 people. The 724,000 population figure takes in a much wider area, more than 520 sq km to be precise, which is roughly an area 24km by 24km, and you can safely say from this, that will take in towns surrounding Leeds like Dewsbury, Ossett, Garforth, Wakefield and Batley for instance, which are all separate towns and boroughs!! Please see link for details: http://www.leedsnet.com/gl//staticpages/index.php?page=20020905110837901 This is yet another example of Leeds cleverly marketing itself. If Sheffield was to use it's latest population of the metropolitan district of sheffield has it's total it would be 1,0783,17 which consists of: Sheffield - 513,234 Rotherham - 248,175 Barnsley - 218,063 Chesterfield - 98,845 Info from the National Statistics Office: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/profiles/00cg.asp
  25. Anyone know what all this talk about a massive £350 million MGM Casino next to Meadowhall is all about?
