Ah yes! I remember it well!  17-12-1977

Married at 2pm.  Wedding Breakfast and pic's 3pm. Home to change 5.30pm.

Met up with everyone at the Stonehouse 7pm. Graduated into the 'Yard' for the rest of the night, under the 'Stars'.  Fab place ! Great atmosphere ! Brilliant finale to our big day.

    You should share some pictures!

The Stonehouse in the courtyard phase...a theme pub before they were invented! Unlike modern chained themes I thought it worked well. It was good Tetleys at that stage but I remember before the courtyard was introduced that it was almost undrinkable so that was another improvement at the same time.

The pub existed BEFORE the courtyard was introduced? I never knew that. I went in the 1990s after the starry sky and courtyard had gone.

Dunnes stores is an Irish firm, I'm not sure why it sold out to Wilkos, but I do know that back in the old days it was a huge Woolies with an enormous cafe upstairs.

I remember most of these shops folks- so thanks for the memories!

My experience of Chapel walk in the seventies is that there were lots of book shops- a methodist one where you went downstairs, and it also had a sort of mezzanine floor above.

Richard shops was on the corner of Chapel walk and Fargate, and Van Allen, where I think Macdonalds or HMV is now.

And Saxone shoe shop that had a windy staircase, where the Halifax is now... and... and... my God! I've slipped back in time!

  4. I know someone who lost her virginity at Ray Stuart's house. This was to another member of the Radio Hallam team who was married! Ray Stuart was not in the house at the time but his colleague obviously used it for assignations.  Back in the 70s and the Money Mountain days.

In times gone by, I'd often be found "scrattin' " for a few pence to get a loaf and some milk!

My Gran would describe something as "tozzin" if it was a "Bobby-Dazzler" ;);)

I've heard older people say they were so skint they were "scrattin' our arses"

  6. Hope someone can suggest somewhere that we can use without - how can I put it - people coming scrabbling about, haggling and wanting to pay 10p for something as this will be for charity and we won't be selling rubbish. I don't want a car boot for this very reason. I was going to write "chav free zone" but thought that might be rude!

    Thanks!

  8. If you had a white bra on the lights would pick it out - very embarrassing.

We went in circa 1986?? when Gary Glitter was there and he fell off his shoes and couldn't appear, did his back in I think.

Wouldn't pay 10p to see him now!

  9. Venus Steak House - oh yes I remember it well!

Have lots of pics from my younger days there, we used to think it was a big night out!!

We went one Xmas, a huge crowd of us, girls and partners. Some charlie ordered a couple of bottles of wine and then acted dumb when the bill arrived - we all ended up chipping in but thought he was a complete Scrooge. My friend dumped him shortly afterwards.

(Martyn from Parson X you know who you are!)
